78THE ULTIMATE FIELD TRIPChallengers’ First Lost Live LessonIntroduction:Christa’s name for her mission:THE ULTIMATE FIELD TRIPBesides the six lost science lessons scheduled for filmingaboard Challenger, two televised “live lessons” were planned for thesixth day of the mission. The time scheduled for each was fifteenminutes. These were to be aired on the Public BroadcastingNetwork (PBS) at 10:40 a.m. and 10:40 p.m. Central Standard Time.The first lesson (actually given its name by Christa) was “TheUltimate Field Trip”. It dealt with explaining and describing tostudents the general layout of the shuttle. Additionally,crewmembers (Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Mike Smith andothers) would be introduced. The <strong>NASA</strong> video archivescontained a wonderful clip of Christa actually “walking through” apractice run of both live lessons. (Click on the hyperlink “walking

It was entitled “Where We’ve Been, WhereWe’ve Going.”Background:The background description for the first live lesson, “TheUltimate Field Trip” comes from the <strong>NASA</strong> publication “Teacher inSpace Project.” It is stated below:“This lesson is based on a quotation by Teacher in SpaceChrista McAuliffe who described her opportunity to go into space as‘the ultimate field trip.’Viewer Objectives:1. To observe the major areas of the Shuttle and describetheir function2. To list and describe the major kinds of activitiescrewmembers perform aboard the Shuttle3. To compare and contrast daily activities in microgravitywith those on Earth.Video Lesson Description:This lesson from space will begin in the flight deck area ofthe Challenger where Christa McAuliffe will introduce thecommander and pilot and will point out the Shuttle controls,computers, and payload bay.When she arrives at the mid-deck, McAuliffe will showviewers the kinds of equipment and processes which help humanbeings live comfortably and safely in the microgravity environmentof the Shuttle.* * * * * * *
