FOOD & DRINK IN SMÍCHOV & ANDĚL
Lebanese
Safir Obchodní centrum Nový Smíchov, Praha 5, Plzeňská
8, MAnděl. It’s true, Safir is in a mall and it is self service, but
for vine leaves, hummus, baba gannoush, tabouleh, fatoush,
falafel and gyros, you cannot complain with the flavour or price.
Hot meals such as grilled fish, chicken in Mediterranean veggies
etc. are daily specials and for the real fast foodies, grab a
sandwich. QOpen 11:00 - 23:00. (45 - 200Kč). PTU
Mexican
Hombre del Mundo Mexicano Praha 5, Nádražní 21,
MAnděl, tel. 257 32 69 02. From the makers of Corleone Pizza
comes this pseudo-Czech-Mex playing Sade, serving hit and miss
meals and some mean cocktails. The margarita is excellent, not
made of the too-sweet mix, mojitos similarly well crafted and all
cocktails can be virginised if you so wish. The food, tender chicken
steak, sizzling & spicy fajitas (not enough guac or salsa – although
the latter is spicy), odd quesadillas, dry nachos, like we say, hit and
miss. QOpen 11:00 - 02:00. (90 - 100Kč).
Seafood
La Cambusa Praha 5, Klicperova 2, MAnděl, tel. 257
31 79 49, www.lacambusa.cz. This provincial Italian
kitchen serves up a small range of saltwater fish (as opposed
to shellfish). In a landlocked country such as this, it’s a good
sign, albeit an expensive one. QOpen 19:00 - 24:00. Closed
Sun. (300 - 1,300Kč). AGP
Bars
Back Doors Praha 5, Na Bělidle 30/310, MAnděl,
tel. 257 31 58 24, www.backdoors.cz. This space is
part restaurant, part bar and part club in the cellar of an old
Smíchov house. Massive wooden furniture and forged iron
work complement the brick walls and parquet floor of its
historical setting. Good for their lunch specials and fabulous
for the night time change to music bar with high quality audio
system, where you can hear various styles of music from
famous Czech DJs. QOpen 11:00 - 02:00, Fri 11:00 - 04:00,
Sat 18:00 - 04:00, Sun 18:00 - 23:00. AE
Jet Set Praha 5, Radlická 1c, MAnděl, tel. 257 32 72
51. The central square bar is low enough for all drinkers to
scan the crowd and check out who’s who this evening, the split
levels ensure dancers with confidence will be centre stage,
and the DJs make sure everyone has to get close together for
any conversation. It’s sleek, chic and designed to empty NYC
wannabes’ pockets with style. The great menu has a Mediterranean
influence. QOpen 11:00 - 02:00. ABGP
Lokalblok Praha 5, nám. 14. října 10, MAnděl, tel.
777 24 24 76, www.lokalblok.cz. A climbing bar in Anděl,
with air conditioned walls, claiming to be the third largest in
Europe. With good overhangs and some tough lines, the wall
will create a thirst that is easily and cheaply quenched in the
popular bar upstairs, where the prime sport is vertical flirting.
A weird foosball table downstairs too. QOpen 11:00 - 24:00.
Climbing wall open 09:00 - 22:00; Sat & Sun 12:00 - 22:00.
60Kč per day. BP
Pekelnej Bar Praha 5, Na Bělidle 38, MAnděl, tel. 257 32
24 10, www.pekelnejbar.cz. Anděl might mean angel in Czech,
but this part of town is acquiring a devilish reputation. Pekelnej,
meaning Hellish, is heavy on chains, red drapery and attitude. DJs
spin nightly although the lack of dance floor means you have to
jostle with one another. Excellent Bloody Mary for just 80Kč and
Czech wine from 160Kč a bottle. QOpen 17:00 - 03:00.
Prague In Your Pocket
The Swamp Praha 1, Ujezd 5/558. The anarchic spirit of
Hawkeye’s tent at the Mash 4077 lives on in this cavernous
bar in Smíchov where the phat beats emanating from the
DJ seem to shift the smoky air while a varied set of drinkers
fill the many rooms, nook and crannies. Head down, down,
down the stairs and join the fun from early to late – or vice
versa. Excellent bar staff. Tram to Švandovo divadlo. QOpen
10:00 - 04:00.
Clubs
Futurum G-6, Praha 5, Zborovská 7, MAnděl, tel.
257 32 85 71, www.musicbar.cz. Smíchov is on its
way to glory, and the way is paved by Futurum’s, er,
futuristic rooms. Its ultra modern conversions with eccentric
lighting and exposed metal and brick is inventive.
The place hosts launch parties for Czech bands, the
odd cultural festival and half-decent DJs. Fridays host
their popular 80s & 90s night. QOpen 20:00 - 03:00.
Admission 100Kč. E
Klub 007 Strahov
Praha 6, Vaníčkova 7, Koleje ČVUT blok 7, tel. 257 21
14 39, www.klub007strahov.cz. Skulking in the basement
of a block of student accommodation near Stadion Strahov,
this hardcore/punk and hip-hop club has been keeping study
results bad for years. QOpen 19:30 - 01:00, Fri, Sat 19:30
- 02:00. E
Popocafepetl Music Club Praha 1, Újezd 19,
www.popocafepetl.cz. New cellar music club from
Popocafeptel who have cool bars at two other locations.
The club has a wine bar attached which can double as a
chill out room. The space is small but well utilised and
already drawing the crowds. Located by trendy Downtown
Café, this block is a new hotspot. Their bookings
are an international bunch from homegrown talent to
bands/members from SCO/FRA/SK/HU. Sundays have
proved a good night for Gitans (CZ) and their gypsy
nights. Gigs begin at 20.30. Admission up to 150Kč.
QOpen 16.00 - 02.00. E
Punto Azul Praha 5, Kroftova 1, MAnděl, tel. 257 32
85 94, www.puntoazul.cz. If you tire of laughing at coked-up
Martini people as the raison d’etre of your night life, try, as a
suitable antidote, a long night with scruffy local ragamuffins
playing tunes ranging between drum’n’bass, underground
techno and deep house. A fine selection of cheap beers in a
comfy budget bar/club with plenty of space to lounge around.
QOpen 17:00 - 01:00, Sat, Sun 19:00 - 03:00. Admission
50 - 100Kč. E
U Bukanýra
G-6, Praha 5, Hořejší nábřeží, MAnděl, tel. 608 97 35
82, www.bukanyr.cz. Find Bukanýra, a houseboat-looking
floating bar and club at it’s new address under Palackého
most. It’s small but friendly and always busy with chilled
groups lounging in the comfortable group seating arrangements.
Various DJs spin discs while boozers smooze.
QOpen 16:00 - 01:00. Closed Mon. Club open Thu - Sat
19:00 - 03:00. B
U Buldoka Praha 5, Preslova 1, MAnděl, tel. 257
32 91 54, www.ubuldoka.cz. Straddling the fence
between a munched out smokey dive of a bar and a
club because it’s open late and has DJs, The Bulldog, in
the same vein that it was started in a few years ago, is
the receptacle for the flotsam and jetsam from Chateau
across the river. QOpen 20:00 - 04:00. Closed Sun.
Admission 50 - 100Kč.
