O U R E D U C A T E D C O M M U N I T YLibraries of the FutureThe County public library system in Venturacurrently operates three branch libraries thatserve about 200,000 visits annually (see Table 8-5). But in a digital age where more and morecontent is available online, the traditional bookborrowing function is becoming outmoded.Library administrators and staff, the City’s LibraryAdvisory Commission, and patrons have allpointed to needs for adding library space,extending operating hours, and updating andexpanding learning resources.At a more fundamental level, the ideas of whatconstitutes a library and how it fits the patterns ofa learning community need to be reexamined.Integration with school libraries, including theVentura College Learning Center, is a top priorityfor this reevaluation, as embodied in the policiesand actions in this chapter.Policies and actions in this chapter seek toexpand lifelong learning opportunities foreveryone in the community.Table 8-5. TheCity provides a variety of learning opportunities,including youth and adult art programs,environmental education, adaptive recreationprograms, youth after-school activities, andsummer camps. Community organizations alsoprovide a range of classes and experiences,including tours, museums, lectures, and hands-onactivities.
