The good qualitiesof all the ten bodhisattva stages can be surpassed, but thegood qualities of the Tathagata stage are unsurpassed."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, why do you say that the birth of abodhisattva is far superior to the births of all other sentientbeings?"The Buddha answered the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara andsaid: "Good son, there are four reasons. First, [that birth] is engenderedfrom the most pure good roots. Second, it is taken upthrough the power of their penetrating thought. Third, the compassion[of their birth] delivers sentient beings. And fourth, beingundented, they are able to remove the defilement of others."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, why do you say that all bodhisattvasproduce an expansive vow, a wondrous vow, a superior vow?"The Buddha answered the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara andsaid: "Good son, there are four reasons. All bodhisattvas are wellable to realize the happiness of abiding in cessation. They couldquickly realize it, yet they renounce that rapid realization of ajoyful abode. Without [being impelled by external] causes or[internal] necessity, they produce the mind of that great vowbecause they desire to benefit all sentient beings. They remainamong great sufferings of various kinds for a prolonged time. Therefore I have said that they produce an expansive vow, a wondrousvow, a superior vow."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, how many precepts must all thebodhisattvas observe?"The Buddha answered the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara andsaid: "Good son, the precepts of the bodhisattvas are the six perfectionsof giving, discipline, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, of these six kinds of precepts, how manyare included within the precept of high discipline, how many within705a83

I teach that[the perfection] of zeal pervades them all."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, among these six precepts, how manyare included within the requisite of merit and how many are includedwithin the requisite of wisdom?"The Buddha answered the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara andsaid: "Good son, that which is included within the precept of highdiscipline is synonymous with that which is included within therequisite of merit. That which is included within the precept ofhigh wisdom is synonymous with that which is included withinthe requisite of wisdom. I teach that both zeal and meditation pervadeboth [kinds of requisites]."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha andsaid: "World-honored One, how do the bodhisattvas observe thesesix precepts?"The Buddha answered the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara andsaid: "Good son, there are five aspects under which they must observethese precepts. The first is that from the first they musthave an intense faith in the wondrous doctrinal teachings aboutthe perfections as found in the bodhisattva canon. The second isthat they must zealously cultivate the wondrous wisdoms accomplishedthrough hearing, reflecting, and meditating in the ten practicesconcerning doctrine. The third is that they must nurturethoughts of wisdom. The fourth is that they must draw near to aspiritual counselor. The fifth is that they must cultivate good qualitieswithout interruption."The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara addressed the Buddha and said:"World-honored One, why have you presented these precepts as six?"84
