Step Into 2010 Feeling Your Best!Can You Believe It! This month marks the 20th Anniversary of The Step and the Arrivalof Aerobic Accessories…Group EXercise celebrates the 20th anniversary of "The Step." This little platformrevolutionized the fitness industry and "aerobics" by facilitating endless variations inchoreography and making group exercise accessible to nearly everyone. Today the Stepis a staple in most clubs -- "It's like the stationary bike of group fitness," reflects GinMiller, the creator of Reebok Step programming. The Step, which subsequently becamethe lowercase step category, not only transformed and reinvigorated classes; it also gotinstructors, trainers, industry leaders and equipment manufacturers thinking aboutother aerobic accessories that might make workout more interesting, exciting andeffective. Accessory-based programs have continued to grow in popularity and very fewgroup fitness classes exist today without accessories of some sort (even dance classesfeature disco ball lighting to help create atmosphere) and the forecast for the future isthe same—accessories are going to continue to grow in popularity because they'reaffordable and a great way to add fun and variety into fitness. Imagine this… flying on a trapeze to get fit or suspending yourbody in space, beaming to improve your balance, strength and coordination, “Piloxing”in a authentic boxer’s ring, throwing kettlebells around to power up your core and yourcardio (all in one), participating in “rowbics” classes (indoor rowing is back!) or “IndoBoarding” (a surfing, skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding experience). If that doesn’tgrab your attention how about… roller dancing, rebounding on a room sized trampoline(Rebounderz), Hoopilates (hula hooping with the benefits of Pilates movements) or“Skinny Jeans” (a yoga, Pilates, Nia, Alexender Techniques) created by BodyFlow’soriginal choreographer Molly Fox.
