‘Increasingefficiency isour key goal’A review of the chief activities of MOL Group, its strategic aims and directionWith the European economy on the brink of recession, with shrinkage in demand for petrol and an increase in diesel due topredicted long-term highs in energy prices and with refining in transformation,MOL Group has plenty of challenges to respond to in the coming years.András Péntek, MOL Group Vice President - Strategy Developmentand István Zsoldos, MOL Group Chief Economist, review possible responses.text/szöveg: Miklós SzigetiFurther recession?‘Although in theory the economic crisis ended in 2009, since it was in thelast quarter of that year that the global economy last shrank, if we look atunemployment figures right now, the crisis is still with us’, says IstvánZsoldos about the macro-economic difficulties which influence thespace in which MOL Group manoeuvres. ‘In the United States, forinstance, the employment rate is 5% lower than it was at the time of theemployment peak in late 2007, while in Hungary the unemployment rateof 10.7% is 0.2% higher than it was in the last quarter of 2009. In Spain, the situation is even worse, but in Germany the employment rate is nowhigher than it was before the crisis!’Usually unemployment is high in countries where debt is high,as is the case with Hungary. In countries like this, people tend tosave rather than spend, partly because they are forced to reducetheir debts. Due to feeble internal demand, service sector growthslows down or stops altogether, while exports, often seen as themotor of economic growth, only require a relatively small labourforce.14Áttekintés a MOL-csoport főbb üzletágairól, stratégiai céljairól és irányairól„Most a hatékonyság növelése a legfontosabb”Recesszióba hajló európai gazdaság, a várhatóan tartósan magas energiaárak miatt csökkenőbenzin- és növekvő gázolajkereslet, átrendeződő finomítói piac – elsősorban e kihívásokra kellreagálnia a MOL-csoportnak a következő években.
‘At the end of 2009, everyone thought that after governments hadrescued the banks the problem was solved, because governments are usuallyconsidered good debtors’, continues András Péntek. ‘By now, however,it has become clear that states are governed by the same laws as everyoneelse, be it an organisation or a private person, so if their debt goes over acertain level, they need to generate cash in some way. Reducing a high levelof debt entails slower economic growth, since it can drain away resourcesfrom investment, construction and development. Debt ratios are found tobe highest in Europe and there are even predictions that the old continentmight once more slide into recession. Endangered countries will eitherdefault, due to the Euro zone crisis - Greece first and foremost - or will onlybe able to maintain solvency at the cost of significant austerity measures. The outcome in either case is that consumption will drop’.Zsoldos does not believe that recession will be continuous overthe next ten years, but he is convinced that growth will not reach thelevels of the past decade. economic growth is also curbed by the factthat even though the banks have beensupported by the states, they are stillunable to lend money to many playersin the economy. Banks are striving toreduce debt more than anything else andthis negatively affects small players inthe marketplace more than others sincethey, unlike mol Group, have no directaccess to capital market resources.Refining strategy – MOLGroup is upgrading theRijeka, Sisak and Mantuarefineries to increaseflexibility andoutput quality.Kifinomult stratégia:A MOL-csoport fejleszti arijekai, sisaki és mantovaifinomítóit, fokozva atermelés rugalmasságátés minőségét.A lasting high in energy prices‘Although people will always need energy, the level of consumption doesvary and is now clearly declining - in other words, we cannot say that thisproduct is entirely inflexible in terms of price’, points out András Péntek.‘It is very noticeable that when petrol prices reach a certain level, many peoplethink twice before getting their cars out. Even diesel, which is mostly usedby industrial customers, shows a clear decline in consumption. Energy pricesusually drop during recessions. This is what happened in the summer of 2009when the world market price of mineral oil dropped to USD 40. If pricesstill grew shortly afterwards and remained high, despite the decelerationof the world economy, this is mostly due to the rapid growth of developingeconomies such as China and India, which are currently at stages where theyuse a lot of energy’.‘Although these economies were already soaring in 2009, everyone atthat time was scared by the crisis and OPEC countries withheld productionand this put pressure on prices. In 2010, however, demand for oil showedrecord growth and this put prices up. Prices have stayed high thisyear, since besides supply dropping as a consequence of political crisesin the Arab world, many bought oil in large quantities for fear that, like Libya, the situation may become exacerbated in, say, Syria, too.The price of oil might drop a little, but we are expecting it to stay highover the long term’, predicts Zsoldos, who believes that dieselmay become even more expensive in the distant future thanpetrol, since it is a scarcer resource but practically irreplaceablein freight transport.István Zsoldos,MOL Group Chief Economist:Oil prices will remain highin the long-term.Zsoldos István,a MOL-csoport vezető közgazdásza:Hosszú távon tartósan magasolajár várható.tések elől.
