20 Exchange StudiesExchange studies at <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong><strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong> is ranked as one of the top twenty universities in Europe for <strong>student</strong>exchange and receives more than <strong>15</strong>00 exchange <strong>student</strong>s per year from all over the world.<strong>Lund</strong> is also the number one choice for <strong>student</strong>s studying in Sweden.<strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong> has exchange agreements with more than680 universities in more than 50 countries worldwide, includingmore than 400 within the EU’s Erasmus programme.You can come to <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong> as an exchange <strong>student</strong>either at Bachelor’s or Master’s level. Exchange <strong>student</strong>s donot pay any tuition fees at <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong>.What are Exchange Studies?The term exchange <strong>student</strong> implies that y<strong>our</strong> home universityhas a formal agreement to exchange <strong>student</strong>s with <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong>.The agreement can be specific to a faculty or departmentat y<strong>our</strong> university or a university-wide agreement. If y<strong>our</strong>are nominated by a university through an exchange agreementwith <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong>, you can apply for exchange studies for aperiod ranging from one semester up to one year.Study structureStudies are usually conducted one c<strong>our</strong>se at a time, with anexamination or essay at the end of each individual c<strong>our</strong>se.Studies at the School of Economics and Management andat the Faculty of Engineering are an exception in that two ormore c<strong>our</strong>ses are often studied in parallel. C<strong>our</strong>ses can beanything from 2 to 20 weeks long, with 5, 10 and 20 weeksbeing the most common ranges. Methods of instruction canvary greatly. Some c<strong>our</strong>ses, mainly in engineering, have asmany as 30 formal lecture h<strong>our</strong>s per week, while some, e.g.social sciences c<strong>our</strong>ses, may have as little as 10 h<strong>our</strong>s, and relymore on the <strong>student</strong>s’ individual reading. The most commonform of instruction is lectures to groups of 25-30 <strong>student</strong>s. Insome subjects, laboratory work is a naturally important element.A total of 30 ECTS credits per semester are consideredas full-time studies.C<strong>our</strong>ses for exchange <strong>student</strong>s<strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong> offers more than 300 c<strong>our</strong>ses in English recommendedfor exchange <strong>student</strong>s. These c<strong>our</strong>ses are presentedon <strong>our</strong> website for up-to-date information. Exchange<strong>student</strong>s can also take c<strong>our</strong>ses in subjects such as Swedishand Scandinavian culture and society and c<strong>our</strong>ses in Europeanand global issues. Exchange <strong>student</strong>s can also apply for Swedishlanguage c<strong>our</strong>ses.Swedish language and orientation programmeAll new exchange <strong>student</strong>s are recommended to arrive in <strong>Lund</strong>on the official Arrival Day where <strong>student</strong>s will be checked inat the <strong>University</strong>. Arrival Day is the start of the two week longOrientation Programme with mentor groups, t<strong>our</strong>s, culturalevents and other social activities. The programme is designedto give exchange <strong>student</strong>s a smooth integration into <strong>Lund</strong><strong>University</strong> and the Swedish society.Language Requirements for exchange <strong>student</strong>sStudents coming to <strong>Lund</strong> <strong>University</strong> as exchange <strong>student</strong>s musthave adequate knowledge of English in order to study thec<strong>our</strong>ses held in English. For non-native English speakers, an<strong>international</strong>ly recognised test of English proficiency is recommended,e.g. the internet-based TOEFL-test (90) or IELTS (6.5).During the Orientation Programme, exchange <strong>student</strong>shave the opportunity to improve their Swedish languageskills or learn the basics through a short introductory c<strong>our</strong>se.The c<strong>our</strong>se is offered at both beginners and intermediate level.Applying for Exchange studies:You must first apply for the exchange at y<strong>our</strong> home university; either through y<strong>our</strong> central International Office orthrough an <strong>international</strong> coordinator at y<strong>our</strong> department or faculty.
