24 PhD StudiesPhD studiesWorld-class research, outstanding research staff and specialised research environmentscreate a breeding ground for PhD studies at Lund University. Doctoral candidates atLund University are not only well prepared for successful careers as independent researchersbut they also have strong opportunities to publish their work independently duringtheir studies and to gain significant teaching experience, making them attractive in themarketplace after graduation.Lund University offers PhD studies at all eight faculties. There are no tuition fees for PhDstudies at Lund University.PhD/Doctoral studiesA PhD programme consists of two parts: courses and thesis,forming a total of 240 ECTS credits, in which the doctoralthesis is to account for at least 120 credits. A PhD involves atotal of four years of full-time study.In Sweden a ‘licentiate’ degree equals the completionof half of the coursework, or thesis, required for a full PhD,i.e. a licentiate degree corresponds to two years of fulltimestudy and at least 60 credits have to be awarded for alicentiate thesis. It is equivalent to the MPhil of the Britisheducation system.Funding and financing doctoral studiesIn Sweden, the most common form of funding postgraduatestudy is through appointment to a doctoral studentshipposition or a doctoral study grant position. In both cases, theUniversity employs the doctoral candidate as a staff memberand pays a salary whilst the doctoral candidate undertakestheir PhD studies. In return the doctoral candidate providessome departmental and teaching duties (no more than 20%of their time).Admission requirementsTo be admitted to doctoral studies, you need to have completedcourses for at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least60 ECTS credits must be for Master’s level studies. In mostcases, students will hold a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’sdegree, with a major in the same subject as the intendedpostgraduate study. The major must include a degree thesispresenting the results of independent research. The qualityof your thesis/theses is of particular importance and it isimportant that you demonstrate a capacity for independentthinking in this piece of work. Students must have a verygood command of English and you may be asked to includeproof of proficiency in the form of a TOEFL or IELTS test, ifrequested by the individual department.Erasmus Mundus Action 2Lund University is a partner in several Erasmus Mundus Action2 “lots”. If you are from an eligible country you can applyfor a scholarship to come to Lund University. Scholarshipsare available to PhD students and may cover living expenses.Refer to the Lund University website for more information.Applying for phd studies:PhD studies are organised at the faculty level and the process for applying for PhD positions is specific to each faculty. Thereis no set application period for PhD positions. Some departments advertise their positions in spring, while others advertiseon an ongoing basis, as and when positions arise. You apply for a PhD position within a certain subject area. Admission toPhD positions is restricted and competition for advertised positions is usually tough.Most faculties advertise their PhD positions on Lund University’s main website through the doctoral job vacancy page. Youcan also check the relevant faculty’s website pages for any additional notices. For the majority of PhD positions at LundUniversity, you apply online through our online job portal and complete the requirements as advertised for the specificvacancy. Applications are sent directly to the faculty together with the officially certified copies of diplomas/certificates/transcripts and other supporting documents required for the specific position.
