49Nicholas Arsenault, (Canada), alumnus fromthe Master’s in Environmental Managementand Policy, now working at SobeysWhere are you working and what is your rolethere?I am working at Sobeys, a food retail chain that isfound across Canada. My title is Sustainability Analyst,I work on our sustainability team in a group ofthree along with our Director and VP of Sustainability.Generally people consider sustainability at thefood retail level and think about traditional aspectssuch as energy, water, and waste at the individualAt LUMES, we do not only learnabout complex sustainabilitychallenges through reading andlistening to professors, we alsolearn more about how to makechange happen in the real-world.In the course Knowledge to Action, for example, students leavethe traditional classroom settingand engage with social and environmentalproblems in the communityby identifying, designing, implementing and evaluatinga sustainability project in collaborationwith different societalactors, such as municipalities, community organisations, andcompanies. In doing so, studentsgain a deeper knowledge of sustainabilityscience and the roleof trans-disciplinarity in turningscientific knowledge into practicalaction. By moving beyond thetraditional academic setting, thegoal is to equip LUMES graduateswith the capacity and enthusiasmneeded to facilitate meaningfulchange in their local communitiesand beyond. From the LUMES-project ”The Radish Garden”.jian chen, (China), Master’s in EnvironmentalStudies and SustainabilityScience (LUMES)”I’m working on a project I started withone of my classmates. Our course teacherhelped us set up a connection to start aschool partnership between a Swedishschool and a Chinese school and nowwe’re implementing our education inpractical work.”stores, or they consider organic, healthy and localfood, but the truth is that most of our impact is inthe supply chain of our private label products. So,much of what I am working on has to do with oursourcing of products throughout the world. How did your degree from the programme andLund University help you to get this job?I don’t think that I would have this job withoutmy degree. I certainly did have experience in thesustainability field before studying at the IIIEE,however it was at the IIIEE that I engaged in theinteraction between environment, economy and industry, which is exactly the space that I am workingin now. My education provided me with insight toreal world applications of sustainability and providedme with an understanding and perspectivethat is the foundation for my work here at Sobeys. What is your relation to Lund and your formerclassmates and teachers at IIIEE now that you arean alumnus?Just today I have already emailed, spoken with ortexted with classmates in Canada, Australia, France,Sweden, Argentina, Bulgaria, Iceland, Denmark, and Indonesia. We’re well connected. We miss eachother. Also, even just within my new professionallife I have come across or spoken with a wide rangeof IIIEE alumni both in Canada and abroad.Looking back and having the new perspective thatyou have now as an alumnus and a professional inyour field, what do you think is the most importantmessage to new students who are just about tostart their studies in Lund?I would probably tell them that they will have agreat education within the classroom, but not tolet the classroom get in the way of their education.By that I mean there is much to be learned from theinternational experiences and backgrounds of theirclassmates and professors, as well as from Swedenin general. Don’t hesitate to go out and seek more, take more with you into your professional life.Environment & Sustainability
