Humanity faces big challengesand science plays a decisive role both in discoveringproblems and in finding solutions for them.Knowledge and research within science have laid thefoundation for much of modern society’s prosperity. However,rapid developments in technology and consumption alongwith growing economies have also generated global problemsassociated with overexploitation of water, land and air. Toensure a wise exploitation of the planet’s resources in thefuture does not only require strengthened research efforts,but also that politicians and other decision makers becomeaware of and base their decisions on scientific knowledge.Science at Lund University is characterised by first-classresearch within a variety of areas, from molecular to ecologicalsystems and from biosphere studies to astronomy andhigh-energy particle physics. Our research and educationare carried out within all major research areas: astronomy,biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences,physics and mathematics. The wide spectrum of research,with several world-leading research groups, serves as aplatform for outstanding higher education and much of theteaching is carried out in the laboratories connected to theresearch front line.
