These towers are Wormspanelled with pilaster strips connected at each stage byarcaded cornices.They are set in a little, stage by stage,as they rise, which gives a very good outline. Thedome-tower has an arcaded gallery round it,and so hasthe western dome-tower, which is flanked by two otherround towers one of which has been re-built in Gothictimes. The apse at this end is also later than theRomanesque part, and not so good. There being notransept at this end the flanking towers are brought closeup to the central one, which they seem to support,effect of this group isvery noble (Plate LXXXV).TheInside, the nave between the two domed spacesconsists of five square bays, cross-vaulted, correspondingto twice that number in the aisle, so that the nave archesare ten on a side (Plate LXXXVI). The piersare allof plain square masonry with only a moulded impost byway of capital.The main piers, corresponding to thedivisions of the nave, have attached pilasters and halfcolumnswith cushion capitals running up to take thevaulting.The intermediate piers have a shallow flatpilaster formed by setting back the arch and wall over it,which runs up and carries two blank arches over theround-headed clerestory windows. The vaulting liaspointed arches, and is later than the church.
