It ispractically a Norman church still, though the primitivestyle of the nave at a period when elsewhere the style waschanging into Early English is apparently an archaicism.The western part of the nave in fact was hardly finishedin the Norman style before the well-known west frontwas begunin the Early Pointed manner. The church isbasilican, and ended eastward in three apses like theoriginal plan at Durham, The central apse still exists,though a good deal altered to make it harmonize withthe Perpendicular retro-choir at the east end.
