5.0 GeneralALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIESConsideration of alternative technologies to be used in building material, energy conservation<strong>and</strong> transportation methods are to be addressed in this chapter.55.1 <strong>Building</strong> MaterialsThe conventional practice of clay, brick consumes large quantity of energy in terms of coal <strong>and</strong>other fuels which are primarily non-renewable <strong>and</strong> highly polluting. Water requirements ofbuilding industry are also very high. Steel which is used in the <strong>construction</strong> process ismanufactured by non-renewable resource. Normally conventional materials used for <strong>construction</strong>are non-renewable sources.5Use of alternative technologies for each component of the buildings of envelope, superstructure,finishes <strong>and</strong> the road <strong>and</strong> surrounding areas are discussed in detail. Some of them are givenbelow:Brick <strong>and</strong> block products with waste <strong>and</strong> recycled contents such as fly ash (wastefrom coal burning plants), blast furnace slag, sewage sludge, waste wood fibre etc.Fly ash based lightweight aerated concrete blocks can be used for walls.Perforated bricks can be used for wall structures.Brick panel with joists, Filler slab roofing, brick funicular shell roofing, RCC channelunits, micro-concrete roofing tiles are some of the alternative techniques for roofing.Some of the alternate materials for openings in <strong>construction</strong> are:-Use of precast thin lintels, use of ferrocement-sunshade cum lintel etc.Use of renewable timber for doors <strong>and</strong> windowsUse of steel manufactures from recycled contentAluminum from verified recycled contentSaw dust based doors <strong>and</strong> window framesFerrocement shutters, PVC doors <strong>and</strong> windows, Rice husk boards, Natural fibrereinforcedpolymer composite door panelsBamboo based products, bamboo strips boards.Alternatives for finishes include Fly ash, Ceramic tiles, Terrazzo floorsThe use of the alternatives for building materials will help reduce the use of non-renewableresources <strong>and</strong> impact on natural resources. The materials used should be mentioned specificallyin the EIA report.
