The chapel was founded in 1557 and there has almost always been an organ inuse since that time. The new instrument was built by Bernard Aubertin <strong>of</strong> Jura, France in2008. It is one <strong>of</strong> only two current instruments by the firm in the UK (the other being atAberdeen University, Scotland). It was founded in 1555 by Sir Thomas White, amerchant. St. John’s is reputed to be the wealthiest in Oxford, with afinancial endowment <strong>of</strong> £313 million as <strong>of</strong> 2010. Although primarily aproducer <strong>of</strong> Anglican clergymen in the earlier periods <strong>of</strong> its history, St.John’s also gained a reputation for both law and medicine. Fellows andalumni have included Archbishop William Laud, Jane Austen’s fatherand brothers, and more recently, Tony Blair, former prime minister<strong>of</strong> the United Kingdom. The college is situated on a single large site.Most <strong>of</strong> the college buildings are organized around seven quadrangles(quads). Not a part <strong>of</strong> the seven quads but owned by St. John’s sincethe 17th century is the Eagle and Child, the meeting place <strong>of</strong> theInklings writers, which included J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis.
