The original instrument was built by thefamous ‘Father’ Smith in 1694 and 1706. Over theyears many alterations were made, until in 1913 analmost totally new organ was built, on a massivescale. Some <strong>of</strong> the pipes were so large that theywould not fit in the organ l<strong>of</strong>t, and had to standin a corner <strong>of</strong> the Ante-Chapel. In 1972 the Swissfirm Metzler built the present mechanical-actioninstrument based on the surviving pipework, andwithin the original cases, <strong>of</strong> the 1694 and 1708 ‘Father’Smith organs.
