Swiss electricity producers are mandated
to continue to provide a secure,
environmentally acceptable and economic
supply of electricity. This is
why the Axpo subsidiaries Axpo AG and
Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG,
together with BKW FMB Energie AG
(BKW), submitted two applications
for general licences to replace the nuclear
power plants Beznau I and II
and Mühleberg to the Swiss Federal Offi
ce of Energy on 4 December 2008.
These applications for general licences
contain chapters on safety, security,
environmental compatibility, a spatial
planning report, a decommissioning
concept, and the demonstration of
feasibility for the safe disposal of all
radioactive waste.
This has started the political
process as defi ned in the Nuclear Energy
Act. The next steps involve the
processing of the applications by the
au thorities. It is expected that the
Swiss electorate will vote on the applications
for general licences to replace
the nuclear power plants in an optional
referendum in 2013.
A large number of investments
in retrofi tting and replacement projects
in the past fi nancial year again
guaranteed the safety and reliability
of the nuclear power plants at a high
level. These include the replacement
and modernization of the safety systems,
the overhaul of the process
control systems for the outbuildings
and the replacement of the baffl e
bolts as well as intensive training courses
for the employees and process
improvements.
New Energies division
The New Energies division is responsible
for implementing Axpo AG’s strategy
regarding new renewable energies.
It carries out relevant projects and
invests in selected companies. The New
Energy division’s portfolio also includes
the provision of energy contracting
services, i.e. services for energy
supply systems.
Expansion of new renewable energies at Axpo AG
Production has been increased by 150 % compared to 2008. This productivity improvement was mainly
achieved in the wood-fi red power plant in Domat/Ems, which commissioned another block.

Since 2006, Axpo AG has been rapidly
building up a corporate network that
was successfully expanded over the past
fi nancial year and now incorporates
investments in 25 companies. During
the past fi nancial year this expansion
included:
− The acquisition of a 51 % stake in
Axpo Genesys AG (former Genesys
Biogas AG), Frauenfeld.
− The restructuring of Axpo Holzenergie
Group by the establishment of
Axpo HE Holding AG (former Tegra
Holding AG) and Axpo Holz und
Energie AG (former Tegra Betrieb AG).
− Strengthening of Axpo Kompogas
AG (former Kompogas AG) by increasing
existing investments and
acquiring new investments.

New renewable energies electricity mix
from Axpo AG
About three-quarters of the electricity generated
from new renewable energies by Axpo AG in
the past fi nancial year were produced in woodfi
red power plants. Electricity from small-scale
hydropower and biomass fermentation supplements
the new renewable energies electricity
mix offered by Axpo AG.
