If there were no cinemas, shops or leisure parks, wherewould you go to have fun and spend time with friends?BricklayingBricklayers build and repair walls inside and outside ofproperties as well as working on other kinds of brickwork,such as tunnel walls and chimney stacks.The job of a bricklayer is to construct the first shell of abuilding, whether it is a house, a school, a bridge or anyother construction. Without a bricklayer, the building simply does not get made.A good bricklayer makes the walls waterproof, weatherproof and securebecause no-one wants to be in a building which is leaky, cold andin danger of being broken into.Site CarpentryCarpenters are skilled manual workers whobuild and install structures made out ofwood, wood-substitutes and other strongmaterials, including steel and concrete.Site carpenters work outside onconstruction sites, erecting the supportingframes for bridges, roads, dams andbuildings. They can also work insidecommercial and residential buildings,installing final touches such as doors,ceilings, staircases and cabinets.Bench JoineryThose employed to create parts in workshopsare referred to as ‘bench joiners’, while those employedon site to fit prefabricated parts are referred to as‘fitters’. Parts include doors, furniture, staircases androof timbers. The tasks of a bench joiner include:Preparing wood and wood-substitutes to be cut bymeasuring and marking them according to instructionsfrom a supervisor or a blueprint.
