Working in a hospital is a rewarding experience. We welcome new babies, ease pain and suffering, repair wounds and cure diseases once thought untreatable. There are, however, challenges that must be overcome in order to maintain the quality of care in our nation’s not-for-profit hospitals, including St. Luke’s. Today, we are meeting these challenges, and doing a good job of it; but in order to continue in this fashion, health care is in need of its own dose of good medicine. Skyrocketing costs that are beyond our control are certainly our greatest obstacle. We are seeing enormous increases in the price of pharmaceuticals, technology and medical equipment; all while consumers are demanding the safest, most advanced medicine. Freestanding, for-profit surgery centers, hospitals and diagnostic centers are taking away the services that contribute to not-for-profit hospitals’ ability to reinvest in community needs. And St. Luke’s continues to shoulder the rising costs of charity care: We proudly maintain our policy to treat every person who comes through our doors — regardless of their ability to pay — yet the number of uninsured and underinsured continues to rise, while Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement continues its steady decline. Each of these factors impacts our capacity to provide the high quality care with which St. Luke’s name is synonymous. St. Luke’s is Boise’s only locally owned, not-for-profit hospital. As such, we have a great responsibility to the people we serve. Perhaps our most important role is that of community “safety net.” We fulfill this role by offering services that cost more to provide than the amount we receive in payment, such as our Hospice, Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Departments, as well as other community benefit services such as free immunizations for children. St. Luke’s pledge to you is that we will be here, no matter when you need us. Throughout the years, the people of our community have opened their hearts to those in need, allowing us to continue our mission of caring. Since 1902, when this great institution was founded, St. Luke’s has always put people first — and this commitment to caring will remain our firmest foundation.
