4 Like most other not-for-profit hospitals, St. Luke’s operates an around-the-clock Emergency Department (ED), and does so with the understanding that this necessary service is likely to operate at a loss. This, and additional “safety net” services, is what sets St. Luke’s apart from investor-owned, limited-service hospitals that tend to compete only for those services that are profitable. We are passionate about providing treatment for every person in need, but it is a costly venture. In addition to the rising number of uninsured, Medicaid covers only 80 percent of the actual cost of providing care each year to the thousands of our patients covered by this program. Communities rely on fire and police departments to be there in times of trouble, and expect the same from hospitals.
