FRONT-LINE MANAGER CURRICULUMLiberty’s management curriculum development effort started in 1997. The design effort was described byRichard A. Dapra in the September/October 1998 issue <strong>of</strong> Corporate University Review [4]. In thisarticle, Dapra described the process <strong>of</strong> segmenting managers into major roles, identifying role-specificcapabilities required for success, and creating the learning infrastructure. Dapra also described theextensive involvement <strong>of</strong> senior management teams in the design, development, and delivery <strong>of</strong> themanagement curriculum.The management curriculum has expanded in recent years. The success <strong>of</strong> this model for managementdevelopment has resulted in the expansion <strong>of</strong> a curriculum approach that leverages instructionaltechnologies to other training areas at Liberty. The structured development available to managers nowextends to two years after the new manager entered the role. The next section provides an overview thecurriculum’s evolution.A. Audience and Curriculum ComponentsEach year about 500 employees are promoted or hired into a Front-Line Management role. Front-LineManagers are responsible for the day-to-day supervision <strong>of</strong> front-line staff and are responsible for hiringtheir staff, setting performance objectives, and evaluating the performance <strong>of</strong> their staff. They are alsoresponsible for developing their staff by providing on-going feedback about job performance, coaching,and assistance with planning development activities that will increase knowledge and skills.134
