<strong>The</strong> Elipse <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>________________________________________________________responsibility for its preservation.• Deen, which is preserved in the Quran, is a system <strong>of</strong> life which isimplemented in its own independent, sovereign state. <strong>The</strong> Stateis established <strong>by</strong> the umma which elects the best person as head<strong>of</strong> state who runs the affairs <strong>of</strong> the state with the consultations <strong>of</strong>umma. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the State is <strong>to</strong> implement the laws <strong>of</strong> theQuran and establish a society in accordance with these principlesand values.• This State was first established <strong>by</strong> the Prophet. After his death, thisState continued <strong>to</strong> exist for a time. After that, the train the ummaderailed. This is called the Ajmi dis<strong>to</strong>rtion in the Deen because, aswe discussed earlier, its first source was in Iran. This term (ajami)means all such beliefs, ideas and schools <strong>of</strong> thought which areagainst the Quran, no matter where they come from.We have seen that the first conflict in the umma emerged over the claim <strong>of</strong>the khilafa <strong>of</strong> Ali. It was asserted that the khalifa cannot be elected. He isappointed and named <strong>by</strong> God and is called ‘Imam’.<strong>The</strong> first Imam is Ali and then this Imama went <strong>to</strong> his descendents <strong>by</strong>inheritance. Earlier, we discussed only one aspect <strong>of</strong> this belief that wasabout politics.
