pa r T T W oJohn regehr is Associate Professor of Practical Theologyat Mennonite Brethren Bible College, Winnipeg, Canada.In 1970, he completed his doctorate at Southern BaptistTheological Seminary with a dissertation, The Preachingof Christoph Blumhardt. As source material for that study,Regehr translated thirty-one talks and sermons out of thecollected works of the younger Blumhardt. Ultimately, Regehr’scommittee decided that the translations should not beincorporated as part of the dissertation itself; so they havenot been published in any form.We have selected sixteen of those pieces to constitute PartTwo of this volume. With the idea of getting as much ofBlumhardt into English as possible, first Regehr and subsequentlywe ourselves deliberately have chosen items thatdo not duplicate what is available from Plough PublishingHouse. With only minor editing, the translation that followsis Regehr’s and is used with his permission.In no way will these sermons serve as a substitute forwhat Ragaz accomplished in Part One. Nevertheless, theydo carry a particular advantage of their own. Here, by readingcomplete presentations rather than excerpts, we can geta better “feel” for Blumhardt the teacher and preacher, forhis style and the impact of his presence. Part One plus PartTwo imparts to us much more of Blumhardt than eithercould do on its own.15
Regehr arranged his selections in the chronological orderof their original delivery; I have chosen, instead, to formthem into a somewhat logical sequence. In the interest ofincluding as much of Blumhardt’s thought as possible, I alsohave taken the liberty to condense and to excerpt where thatseemed helpful.Regehr made his selections from the four-volume collectionof the works of the younger Blumhardt, ChristophBlumhardt: Eine Auswahl aus seinen Predigten, Andachten undSchriften [CFBL], herausgegeben von R. Lejeune (Rotapfel Verlag,1925-37). Each selection in Part 2 includes a referencethat identifies each piece as to source and date and indicateswhat sort of editing has been done. — V.E.157
