Suddenlyit will become bright over the whole earth—to thepraise of God and of our Savior, Jesus Christ. May he sendjoyful hope and victorious confidence into our hearts evenin the darkest days so we may wait through to the end andbe saved at last.“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”(Mt. 28:20)The Savior’s being with us has reference to the end of theworld, not to its continuance. All the days of the disciplesof Jesus are workdays looking forward to the consummationof the kingdom of God, with which event the present futileworld will come to an end.In the special sense of our text, Jesus is not with a personwho spends his days for the sole purpose of sustaining earthlylife. The Lord does not wish to spend too much efforton the continuance of the world. After all, it is corruptible;there is nothing left to be done but to await the wearing outof the decaying structure and the creating of a new one.For the time being, we must do the best we can with whatwe have, not being too frightened when at times things collapseunder our feet. We are only being loosed from everythingearthly. Never again will the disciples of Jesus be reallycomfortable; but in view of the end coming upon the world,13
