(Mic. 4:1-3)“What is the point of origin for God’s supervision ofthe nations?” We answer: The existence of Zion, the mountainof peace, is the basis of all God’s decisions in worldhistory. Not for their own sake, but for the sake of Zion,nations must fall and rise again. “I give people in return for22
you, nations in exchange for your life” (Isa. 43:4), God sayswith reference to the continuance of his Mount Zion.What then is Zion on earth? We say concisely: Zion is theSavior, Jesus Christ, and what belongs to him. With himis bound up a history on earth in which, in ever wideningcircles, individual people, whole nations, and ultimately thewhole world shall be caught up. The goal of this history is akingdom of peace based on a new world order. All of God’sutterances through the prophets tell us this. Likewise, allthe verdicts of God are manifested in judgment and grace,because, in consequence of these, all nations shall come andworship God (Rev. 15:4).The faith that this mountain of peace has its triumphalhistory in Jesus, to the honor of God the Father; and theassurance that, in the interests of total victory, God the Almightygoverns not only the church of Christ but all nationsas well—these make us happy and confident and allowour hearts to become wide, since through these we becomeemancipated from paltry jealousy against each other.Before God, all nations have equal worth; yet, in thecourse of time, those people are blessed who enter into God’splans with a self-denying love that seeks the good of all nations.The history of Zion, this mountain of peace, is notopen for all to see, as is the transitory history of a nation.The stirrings of God’s kingdom-history originate in eternityand reach the nations in a variety of juridical sentences; butpeople seldom see the connection between their moment of227
