294Protocols GuideIBM ProtocolsProtocol NameNetBEUI: NetBIOS ExtendedUser InterfaceProtocol DescriptionNetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI) is an extendedversion of NetBIOS, that lets computers communicate within alocal area network. NetBEUI formalizes the frame format thatwas not specified as part of NetBIOS, so is sometimes calledthe NetBIOS frame (NBF) protocol.NetBEUI provides data transportation but it is not a routabletransport protocol. NetBEUI works at the Transport and Networklayers of a local area network (LAN). NetBEUI is a good performancechoice for communication within a single LAN. For internetworkrouting, its interface must be adapted to other protocolssuch as Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) or TCP/IP. Veryoften, both NetBEUI and TCP/IP are installed in each computerand the server is set up to use NetBEUI for communication withinthe LAN and TCP/IP for communication beyond the LAN.NetBIOS and NetBEUI are developed by IBM for its LAN Managerproduct and have been adopted by Microsoft for its WindowsNT, XP and 2000, LAN Manager, and Windows for Workgroupsproducts. Novell, Hewlett-Packard and DEC use them incomparable products.Protocol StructureNetBEUI frame header is the same as for NETBIOS:2 2 1 1 2 2 2 bytesLengthDeliminatorCommandData1 Data2Destination name (16 bytes)Source name (16 bytes)XMITCorRSPCorRelated protocolsTCP, SMP, Ethernet, Token Ring, X.25, UDP, NetBIOS, PPPSponsor SourceNetBIOS and NetBEUI are IBM protocols.Referencehttp://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/TimothyDEvans/contents.htmNetBios, NetBEUI, NBF, SMB, CIFS Networkinghttp://www.javvin.com/protocol/rfc1001.pdfPROTOCOL STANDARD FOR A NetBIOS SERVICE ON ATCP/UDP TRANSPORT: CONCEPTS AND METHODShttp://www.javvin.com/protocol/rfc1002.pdfPROTOCOL STANDARD FOR A NetBIOS SERVICE ON ATCP/UDP TRANSPORT: DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS• Length - The length of the header.• Deliminator - A delimiter indicating that subsequentdata is destined for the NetBIOS function.• Command - A specific protocol command that indicatesthe type of function of the frame.• Data 1 - One byte of optional data per specific command.• Data 2 - Two bytes of optional data per specific command.• Xmit/response correlator - Used to associate receivedresponses with transmitted requests.• Destination name/num - In non-session frames thisfield contains the 16-character name.• Source name/num - In non-session frames this fieldcontains the 16-character source name.
