Network management systems learn of problems byreceiving traps or change notices from network devices implementingSNMP.Currently, there are three versions of SNMP defined: SNMP v1,SNMP v2 and SNMP v3. In this document, we provide informationprimarily for SNMPv1. SNMPv1 is a simple request/responseprotocol. The network-management system issues arequest, and managed devices return responses. This behavioris implemented by using one of four protocol operations: Get,GetNext, Set, and Trap. The Get operation is used by the NMSto retrieve the value of one or more object instances from anagent. If the agent responding to the Get operation cannot providevalues for all the object instances in a list, it does not provideany values. The GetNext operation is used by the NMS toretrieve the value of the next object instance in a table or a listwithin an agent. The Set operation is used by the NMS to setthe values of object instances within an agent. The Trap operationis used by agents to asynchronously inform the NMS of asignificant event.For information on SNMP, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3, please checkthe corresponding pages.Protocol StructureSNMP is an application protocol, which is encapsulated in UDP.The general SNMP message format for all versions is shownbelow:Version Community PDU• Version -- SNMP version number. Both the managerand agent must use the same version of SNMP. Messagescontaining different version numbers are discardedwithout further processing.• Community -- Community name used for authenticatingthe manager before allowing access to theagent.• PDU for SNMPv1 -- There are five different PDUtypes: GetRequest, GetNextRequest, GetResponse,SetRequest, and Trap. A general description of eachof these is given in the next section.• PDU type—Specifies the type of PDU transmitted:0 GetRequest, 1 GetNextRequest, 2 GetResponseand 3 SetRequest.• Request ID—Associates SNMP requests with responses.• Error status—Indicates one of a number of errorsand error types. Only the response operation setsthis field. Other operations set this field to zero.• Error index—Associates an error with a particular objectinstance. Only the response operation sets thisfield. Other operations set this field to zero.• Variable bindings—Serves as the data field of theSNMPv1 PDU. Each variable binding associates aparticular object instance with its current value (withthe exception of Get and GetNext requests, for whichthe value is ignored).The format of the Trap PDU is shown below:PDUtypeEnterpAgentAddrGenTrapSpecTrapTimeStampObj 1,Val 1Obj 1,Val 1• PDU type --Specifies the type of PDU (4=Trap).• Enterprise -- Identifies the management enterpriseunder whose registration authority the trap was defined.• Agent address- - IP address of the agent, used forfurther identification.• Generic trap type -- Field describing the event beingreported.
