113National Human Rights Movement(Movimento Nacional de DireitosHumanos, MNDH)The MNDH is a nonprofit, democratic, ecumenical, non-partisanorganization created by civil society. It functions throughout Brazilthrough a network of more than 300 related organizations. The MNDHwas founded in 1982 and is today, the primary spokesperson for thepromotion of human rights in Brazil.The MNDH's actions are founded on the mission statement, InDefense of Life, Against Violence." It focuses on the universal,interdependent, and indivisible nature of human rights, as articulated inthe 1986 Olinda Declaration (Carta de Olinda, de 1986). Its principalobjective is to create a culture of human rights where dignity and respectfor the physical, moral, and intellectual integrity of humankind prevail,regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, political, religious, orsexual preference, etc.The following focuses guide the MNDH's programs: a) trainingsocial activists to organize, strengthen, and articulate the needs of civilsociety, b) creating public policy proposals that affirm citizenship in itsbroadest sense, c) participating actively in the historical struggles ofexcluded groups, d) active lobbying on both the national and internationallevels.National Movement on HumanRights Northeast Regional Office(Movimento Nacional de DireitosHumanos Regional Nordeste)The MNDH Northeast Regional Office works with 75 affiliatedorganizations on clearly-defined projects such as: The Program forMonitoring Public Policy (Programa de Monitoramento das Políticas Públicas),which aims to develop public policies on justice and security issues with aspecific focus on the Northeast; The Program for Institutional Development(Programa de Desenvolvimento Institucional) which seeks to train affiliatedorganizations to find alternative forms of subsistence, as well as the
