Taken together, media-reported homicides occurringduring the night and pre-dawn hours claimed the lives of 8,377 persons or60.19% of victims, compared with 3,283 persons killed during the day(morning/afternoon). For 2,257 victims (16.22%), the sources did notreport the time of the incident. The increased incidence on weekends may be explained by the factthat people tend to travel outside their ordinary trajectories (home-workhome)and venture into areas with which they are less familiar. As anotherstudy of criminal violence concludes, "[t]he days on which the vastmajority of people do not work and are thus less exposed to the variousmechanisms of social control and regulation present in the workenvironment, are the days on which the greatest number of homicides34occur."34.
