Research and development activities focused on qualifying new materials and technologies in order to meet the demands of future generations of engines. Bearings resistant to heavy oil for medium-speed diesel and gas ship engines were further developed, and new lead-free bearing solutions with electroplated tin running layers for trucks are being developed. In the future, engine bearing technology should also be able to find uses beyond the field of combustion engines. The area of wind turbines is particularly rich in potential for transmission and rotor bearings. Since the beginning of the product development process, Miba has been working in conjunction with customers. New generations of bearings feature higher load capacity and lower operating risk, making it possible, for example, to meet new environmental regulations. Miba Automation Systems is a part of the Bearing Group and focuses successfully on the market niche of special machinery. Automation Systems develops, designs and builds special machinery as well as mobile machining centers for highly accurate machining of large components. Our unique selling position in Europe brings us an encouragingly high order volume and a good level of capacity utilization. The relocation and expansion of the assembly plant has created the necessary conditions for further large orders and profitable growth. 49
50 Encouraging development in the Far East The outlook for Miba Bearing Group in 2009-2010 remains cautious. Despite encouraging development in the Far East, especially in the growth market of China, Miba Bearing Group expects only a slight increase in sales in 2010-2011.
