ANDREW GABRIEL
can be one of the Jaspers top scoring
options. After getting acclimated to the
Division I game last season, Beamon
earned an increased role toward the end
of the year playing 11.4 minutes per game
over his last 10 appearances. He posted
a career-high 13 points on two occasions.
Beamon was the Jaspers most consistent
shooter last season, logging a 44.8%
field goal mark. The high-flying combo
guard came to Manhattan from Roslyn
High School where as a senior he led all
of Long Island in scoring, averaging 34.2
points per game. He logged eight 40-point
games and poured in a school record 56
points.
“George plays with a lot of energy and
passion,” explained Rohrssen. “It would
be good to see him expand his role from
last season to this one.”
Alvarado will take on the most
important role on the court, serving as
the Jaspers’ floor general. The 6’2” point
guard from Bronx was a 2010 First Team
All-CHSAA and 2010 Third Team All
New York State Class AA honoree at All
Hallows High School. Alvarado brings
great floor vision and ball distribution to
Riverdale. The mark of a true point guard,
he has a pass first mentality, but knows
how to finish as well. He was named
one of 10 players in New York City to
be selected for the 2010 Jordan Brand
Classic Regional Team.
“Mike committed to us before he played
his first game as a junior in high school. He
has wanted this opportunity for quite awhile
and now it is here,” Rohrssen stated.
Sophomore guard Mohamed Koita
is one of the most athletic players in the
MAAC. He brings a smooth yet explosive
offensive game to the hardwood and
plays strong defense on both ends of
the floor. The native of Cergy, France
made his first of 10 appearances midway
through the 2009-2010 campaign. He
averaged 3.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and
17.5 minutes per game. The former
track star is a double-double threat who
plays above the rim. Koita is also a good
shooter whose range extends beyond the
arc.
“Mohamed has shown flashes of
excellent play. He is rehabbing diligently
to overcome two injuries so he can return
to the court this season,” Rohrssen said.
The Jaspers have added to their
arsenal with double guns from downtown
in newcomers Kidani Brutus and
Torgrim Sommerfeldt. Brutus, a native
of the Bronx, is a junior transfer from Carl
Albert State College in Poteau, Okla. The
6’1”, 220 pound shooting guard averaged
8.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists
and shot 41.7% from the field over 27
appearances last season. Brutus played
high school ball locally at Wings Academy
where he received All-Bronx honors after
posting 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6
assists per game as a senior. Brutus adds
depth to the Jaspers line up at the point
guard position.
“Kidani and Torgrim have shown an
ability to shoot the ball well. We would like
for Kidani to be able to serve the club in
different roles in the backcourt this year.
Torgrim’s size can be a valuable asset to
this team,” said Rohrssen.
Sommerfeldt is a rangy shooter from
Drammen, Norway who gained significant
interest from Division I programs after
the 2008 Nike Hoop Summit where he
played for the World Team as one of the
top under-20 prospects. Sommerfeldt
comes to Riverdale from NTG Academy in
Oslo, Norway. He was also a member of
Norway’s National Team with experience
playing on the under-16, under-18 and
under-20 squads.
Junior Liam McCabe-Moran adds
depth to the Jaspers backcourt. The
2010 MAAC Academic Honor Roll
representative appeared in five games off
the bench last season. McCabe-Moran
transferred to Manhattan from Harcum
College where he played in 20 games
averaging 2.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and
1.1 assists per contests. The two-time
All New York State selection who set a
school record scoring over 1,400-points at
nearby Rye High School was a member
of the Hudson Valley Team which earned
a silver medal at the 2010 Empire State
Games.
“Liam is a good shooter and works hard
each day in practice,” noted Rohrssen.
THE FRONT COURT
The Jaspers display their most size up
front in recent years. With a talented mix
of length, strength and finesse Manhattan
will be a force to be reckoned with down
low. The Manhattan front court will be
powered by senior Andrew Gabriel,
along with newcomers Demetrius
Jemison, Robert Martina, Roberto
Colonette and Rhamel Brown.
Gabriel is a crafty inside player who has
