Before the Jaspers knew it<br />

before or since. The only<br />

thing stopping their perfect<br />

season was St. John’s of<br />

Brooklyn and the strong<br />

team did just that, beating<br />

the <strong>Manhattan</strong> squad 30-16.<br />

Even with that defeat The<br />

New York Times selected<br />

<strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>College</strong> as the<br />

#1 college basketball team<br />

in New York City.<br />

Facilities were also enhanced under Brother<br />

Scanlan’s leadership, including the addition<br />

of a state-of-the-art multipurpose turf facility<br />

at Gaelic Park. Gaelic Park now serves as<br />

the home to <strong>Manhattan</strong> soccer, lacrosse and<br />

softball, as well as the college’s intramural<br />

programs. In any given year, different sports<br />

brought solid victories and extraordinary press<br />

and recognition to the Riverdale campus. Track<br />

began a new Renaissance under Brother<br />

Scanlan with several national championships<br />

and new Olympians. Brother Scanlan presided<br />

over two MAAC Commissioner’s Cups for the<br />

success of the entire Division I program in<br />

2002-03 and 2003-04.<br />

Off campus, Brother Scanlan served as<br />

a member of the NCAA Division I AA/AAA<br />

Presidential Advisory Group and head of the<br />

MAAC President’s Commission and Marketing<br />

Committee. He helped initiate the MAAC Men’s<br />

and Women’s Basketball Championships<br />

played at the same venue with all member<br />

schools invited. Brother Scanlan worked to<br />

expand the MAAC Television and multimedia<br />

efforts
