GAME 13 • MARIST 72, MANHATTAN 66
JAN. 2, 2010 • MCCANN CENTER, POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
The Manhattan men’s basketball team fell 72-66 to Marist at the McCann Center. Jaspers
guard Rico Pickett led all scorers with 26 points on a 9-for-14 shooting effort, to go along with his
seven rebounds. Senior Darryl Crawford added 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in Manhattan’s
final contest of a demanding seven game road series. The Jaspers fell into a rut shooting
just 28% (7-25) in the first half, forcing the team to battle uphill the rest of the contest. While
Manhattan posted just 21 points in the opening stanza, Marist used 11 points from freshman guard
Candon Rusin to take an 11 point advantage into the break. Rusin was perfect from beyond the
arc going 3-for-3 in the first 20 minutes, including the go-ahead trey at 15:28 which gave the Red
Foxes a lead (5-4) they would not relinquish. Manhattan fought to overcome a deficit which grew
as large as 13 points early in the second half. The Jaspers eventually found their shooting touch,
and were led by Pickett who scored seven of the team’s first nine points of the second half. Crawford
also was active in the scoring column posting 15 of his 17 points in the period. The Jaspers
improved to 46.7% (14-30) shooting in the second half and pulled within four points three times
in the last minute, but could not capitalize on key opportunities to get any closer. Five Red Foxes
delivered double-digit scoring efforts, most notably freshman forward Rob Johnson who helped
ward off the Jaspers scoring all 10 of his points over 17 minutes of action in the second half.
Marist converted 50% (23-46) of its field goal attempts, and went 41.2% (7-17) from 3-point territory.
Freshmen Devin Price and Sam Prescott led the Red Foxes with 13 points apiece. Prescott
sank three 3-pointers in 19 minutes coming off the bench. Defensively, Manhattan received a
good effort from Patrick Bouli who finished with three steals and eight rebounds. In a reserve role,
senior guard Antoine Pearson added eight points, four assists and three rebounds in 28 minutes.
Classmate Brandon Adams finished with six points, four rebounds and three steals. The Jaspers
converted 22-of-30 (73.3%) free-throws and recorded 17 second chance points. Manhattan
slightly edged Marist in the rebounding column (34-33), marking only the third time this season the
team won the battle of the boards.
GAME 14 • RIDER 65, MANHATTAN 64
JAN. 4, 2010 • DRADDY GYMNASIUM, RIVERDALE, N.Y.
Broncs’ forward Mike Ringgold made a tip in that bounced on top of the rim three times before
falling with seven seconds remaining to send Rider home with a 65-64 victory over Manhattan
(6-8, 1-3 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium. Jaspers’ guard Rico Pickett led all players with 25 points.
Patrick Bouli added 13 points on a 5-for-8 shooting night as Manhattan dropped its third straight
contest. Manhattan led by as many as 16 points in the contest and held an advantage for nearly
36 minutes, including 19 minutes in the second half. Pickett got the Jaspers rolling on a 15-3 run
to erase an early two point deficit, their only disadvantage of the first half. The junior from Alabama
sank five consecutive shots during the run, including three 3-pointers, for 13 points to give
Manhattan a 17-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Bouli’s 3-poitners were also falling in the first
half. He shot 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Antoine Pearson gave the Jaspers one more just
eight seconds before intermission to give Manhattan its largest lead, 34-16. Pearson finished with
eight points off the bench. The last second of the first half proved to be a prosperous one for the
Broncs as they posted five quick points. It began when senior guard Ryan Thompson sank a pair
of free-throws, and then junior guard Justin Robinson took advantage of an inbounding blunder
and sank a 3-pointer as time expired. Manhattan shot 54.5% (6-11) from beyond the arc in the
first half. The Jaspers limited Rider to just 23 points in the opening period. The Jaspers battled
in the second stanza, but ran into trouble holding off Rider which shot 61.5% from the field and
went 7-for-10 from 3-point range. Ringgold scored all nine of his points in the second period, and
Robinson added nine more to finish with a team-high 17 points. Robinson went 7-for-10 shooting.
Rider made its push midway through the second half rallying for a 17-4 run to take a 54-53 lead
with 8:45 remaining. The Jaspers fought back responding first with Bouli’s lay up, and then a dazzling
three point play by Pearson to regain a four point edge (58-54) with seven minutes to go. The
contest remained a two possession game the rest of the way. Rider got its break with 29 seconds
left on Pearson’s miss on a front end of a 1-and-1, which set up Ringgold’s clutch bucket. Pearson
got one last heave from 3 that fell short as time expired and Rider escaped with the victory. The
Jaspers got seven points and nine rebounds from senior forward Brandon Adams. Broncs’ forward
Novar Gadson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Thompson finished with
12 points.
