(1927–2000)<br />
• 1927 Born March 16<br />
• 1945 Graduated I.C. Norcom H.S., Portsmouth, Virginia<br />
• 1947–49 Served as a sergeant in U.S. Army, w<strong>here</strong> he was<br />
voted the military’s outstanding athlete in ’48<br />
• 1951 Exposed basketball point-shaving scandal<br />
• 1953 Graduated from <strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
• 1953 Signed to play with Harlem Globetrotters<br />
• 1954 Suffered severe spinal chord injury as a passenger in<br />
traffic accident. Confined to a wheelchair for rest of his life<br />
• 1957–66 Coached PanAm Jets, a wheelchair basketball team,<br />
to four international championships<br />
• 1979 Inducted into <strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>College</strong> Hall of Fame<br />
• 1981 Inducted into National Wheelchair Basketball<br />
Association Hall of Fame<br />
• 1985 Inducted into I.C. Norcom High School Hall of Fame<br />
• 1987 Inducted into Virginia Sports Hall of Fame<br />
• 1994 Began work as director of the NYC strategic<br />
planning unit for the department of youth and<br />
community development<br />
• 1995 Inducted into Brooklyn U.S.A. Hall of Fame<br />
• 1997 Honored at two testimonial dinners<br />
• 1998 Received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from<br />
<strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>College</strong> for “taking a high, moral and<br />
ethical path in a life that defied odds”<br />

• 2000 Appeared for the first time on ballot for election to<br />
the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame<br />
