The Single Word Reading Test 6-
16 (SWRT) provides a measure of
a pupil’s word reading skill and
will contribute to an assessment
of reading achievement, as well
as informing teaching and
learning strategies.
Individually administered SWRT
contains six graded sets of ten
words of increased difficulty.
Parallel forms allow repeat testing
and vast amount of diagnostic
information can be obtained in
the form of sight vocabulary
analysis and error analysis. It is
ideal as a quick screening test for checking progress at regular intervals
and as part of the qualifying criteria for Access Arrangements.
MIST identifies early literacy difficulties and Forward Together provides
a recovery programme that actively involves parents, for use with up to
eight pupils. Lasting from eight to 12 weeks, the programme can bring
pupils’ skill levels in reading and writing up to that of their classmates,
raising confidence and self-esteem. Each pupil works through the
Forward Together Activity Book at home with the help of a parent, or in
school with Learning Support staff.
Results from MIST give an overall picture of a pupils’ performance and
their learning strategies in functions which are related significantly to
early reading and writing.
Why use MIST and Forward Together?
• MIST identifies the lowest-achieving 20-25% of pupils in any one
class or year group
• MIST is group administered, so time is spent efficiently and those
needing extra support, who may have been previously overlooked,
can be screened into the Forward Together Programme
• Whilst Forward Together can be used in school it also encourages
parental involvement and early home-school links that can influence
attitudes to helping children throughout their school career
• Pupils work at their own pace, completing the programme in eight to
12 weeks
