Food Technology The topics included in the syllabus are: AS. Materials & Components including functions and working properties of food. Nutritional Characteristics. Relationship between diet and health. Energy and energy balance. Food additives. Design and Market Influences including dietary planning, needs, environmental issues, special diets, stages of food product development and other issues within market trends. A2. Is as above but the knowledge, understanding and depth of work is more developed. There is also a section on Design and Making Practices. Prospects: Excellent!! The food industry is the biggest employer in the country. Latest research from one university indicates that for every food studies graduate they had a choice of eight jobs. Openings include Nutrition and Health Promotion, Product Development, Research, as well as Management in the numerous Food Industries. This A-Level is also useful in gaining entry into University or higher education. Fact File Entry requirements An interest in the subject is essential with a minimum grade of C at GCSE in a Technology subject. Specification AQA D&T Food Technology. AS Assessment Unit 1 Written paper 2 hours 50% of the total AS marks 25% of the total A level marks This paper is based primarily on Materials and components (ingredients used in product making and what happens to them and why) Unit 2 Coursework (Approx 50 hours) 50% of the total AS marks 25% of the total A level marks. Design portfolio showing the design, make and development of a product. A2 Assessment Unit 3 Written paper 2 hours 25% of the total A level marks This paper is based primarily on Design and Manufacture. Unit 4 Coursework (Approx 60 hours) 25% of the total A level marks. Candidates submit evidence of a single, substantial designing and making activity. Design and Technology would go well with... French If you want to acquire skills which will give you an edge in the modern European Workplace then languages should be at the forefront of your priorities. Knowing a foreign language opens doors to new fields, new cultures and experiences. Today, people with foreign language skills are in ever increasing demand, be it in the world of media, sales, public relations, tourism, travel or education. The AS and A2 courses extend naturally develop the skills learned at GCSE. Both courses seek to develop your language skills and appreciation of cultural aspects of France and countries where the language is used. Over the two years equal emphasis is placed on each of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Candidates preparing for the A2 components of the course will be expected to develop a wider knowledge of the language and a deeper understanding of French culture, together with a higher level of critical awareness. You will be expected to use the language extensively and to develop ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics, including key social, political and environmental issues which affect France and Europe today. The AS component comprises three papers as follows, Fact File Entry Requirements Grade A or B in French GCSE is Preferred. Grade C will be considered subject to interview. Motivation and Interest. With the expansion of the European Union, it combines particularly well with Business Studies to offer exciting career prospects, both at home and abroad.
