Food Technology<br />
The topics included in the syllabus are:<br />
AS. Materials & Components including functions<br />
and working properties of food. Nutritional<br />
Characteristics. Relationship between diet and health.<br />
Energy and energy balance. Food additives.<br />
Design and Market Influences including dietary planning,<br />
needs, environmental issues, special diets, stages of food<br />
product development and other issues within market trends.<br />
A2. Is as above but the knowledge, understanding and<br />
depth of work is more developed. There is also a section<br />
on Design and Making Practices.<br />
Prospects:<br />
Excellent!!<br />
The food industry is the biggest employer in the country.<br />
Latest research from one university indicates that for every<br />
food studies graduate they had a choice of eight jobs.<br />
Openings include Nutrition and Health Promotion,<br />
Product Development, Research, as well as Management in<br />
the numerous Food Industries.<br />
This A-Level is also useful in gaining entry into University<br />
or higher education.<br />

Unit 2 Coursework (Approx 50<br />
hours) 50% of the total AS marks<br />
25% of the total A level marks.<br />
Design portfolio showing the<br />
design, make and development<br />
of a product.<br />
A2 Assessment<br />
Unit 3 Written paper 2 hours<br />
25% of the total A level marks<br />
This paper is based primarily on<br />
Design and Manufacture.<br />
Unit 4 Coursework (Approx 60<br />
hours) 25% of the total A level<br />
marks. Candidates submit evidence<br />
of a single, substantial designing and<br />
making activity.<br />
Design and Technology<br />
would go well with...<br />
Either Arts or Science subjects as<br />
well as Business Studies, Chemistry,<br />
IT and Geography.<br />
This course will run subject to sufficient<br />
numbers of students opting for the course,<br />
availability of staff and restrictions imposed by<br />
