French<br />

If you want to acquire skills which<br />

will give you an edge in the modern<br />

European Workplace then languages should be<br />

at the forefront of your priorities. Knowing a foreign<br />

language opens doors to new fields, new cultures and<br />

experiences. Today, people with foreign language skills are<br />

in ever increasing demand, be it in the world of media,<br />

sales, public relations, tourism, travel or education.<br />

The AS and A2 courses extend naturally develop the skills<br />

learned at GCSE. Both courses seek to develop your<br />

language skills and appreciation of cultural aspects of France<br />

and countries where the language is used. Over the two<br />

years equal emphasis is placed on each of the four skills of<br />

listening, speaking, reading and writing.<br />

Candidates<br />

preparing for the A2<br />

components of the course will be<br />

expected to develop a wider knowledge of the language<br />

and a deeper understanding of French culture, together<br />

with a higher level of critical awareness. You will be<br />

expected to use the language extensively and to develop<br />

ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics, including key<br />

social, political and environmental issues which affect France<br />

and Europe today.<br />

The AS component comprises three papers as follows,<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

Grade A or B in French GCSE is Preferred.<br />

Grade C will be considered subject to<br />

interview.<br />

Motivation and Interest.<br />

Willingness to use the spoken language.<br />

Willingness to take part in work experience<br />

in France.<br />

Specification<br />

Edexcel AS/A2 Level French.<br />

Assessment:<br />

The course is modular in structure with<br />

examinations taking place in June of Year 12<br />

(AS) and June of year 13 (A2)<br />

French would go well with ….<br />

Various subjects such as English, German,<br />

ICT, History, Religious studies, Geography,<br />

Maths and Business Studies.<br />

This course will run subject to sufficient numbers of<br />

students opting for the course, availability of staff and<br />

restrictions imposed by the timetable.<br />

1. Speaking (for about 10 minutes) on one of these topics;<br />

a) Youth culture<br />

b) Lifestyle, health and fitness<br />

c) The world around us<br />

d) Education and employment<br />

2. Listening, reading and writing.<br />

Prospects:<br />

The importance of languages in the modern workplace<br />

cannot be underestimated and a qualification in French at<br />

this level will be a valuable asset. AS/A2 level French gives<br />

you access to a wide range of degree courses including<br />

those in languages, European studies and international<br />

management. With the expansion of the European Union,<br />

it combines particularly well with Business Studies to offer<br />

exciting career prospects, both at home and abroad.<br />
