German If you want to acquire skills which will give you an edge in the modern European Workplace then languages should be at the forefront of your priorities. Knowing a foreign language opens doors to new fields, new cultures and experiences. In today’s increasingly international world, people with foreign language skills are in ever increasing demand, be it in the world of media, sales, public relations, tourism, travel or education. The AS and A2 courses extend naturally from the skills developed at GCSE. Both courses seek to develop your knowledge of the language, language skills and appreciation of cultural aspects of Germany and countries where the language is used. Equal emphasis is placed on each of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Candidates preparing for the A2 components of the course will be expected to develop a wider knowledge of the language and a deeper understanding of German culture, together with a higher level of critical awareness. You will be expected to use the language extensively and to develop ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics, including key social, political and environmental issues which affect Germany and Europe today. The AS component comprises three papers as follows, 1. Speaking (for about 15 minutes) on your chosen topic; 2. Listening and writing; 3. Reading and writing. Prospects: The importance of languages in the modern workplace cannot be overestimated and a qualification in German at this level will be a valuable asset. AS/A2 level German gives you access to a wide range of degree courses including those in languages, European studies and international management. With the expansion of the European Union, it combines particularly well with Business Studies to offer exciting career prospects, both at home and abroad. Health & Social Care If you are interested in any of the caring professions, then Health & Social Care is an ideal choice. You learn in a practical way through challenging and interesting assignments about all aspects of health and social care. There is a wide range of topics including promoting quality care, mental health issues, communicating with clients, promoting good health, understanding human behaviour, anatomy and physiology and child development. Fact File Entry Requirements 5 Grades C or above at GCSE Specification OCR Health and Social Care Assessment As Level (3 Units) Unit 1 Promoting quality care. Externally assessed. Unit 2 Communication in care settings. Portfolio. Unit 3 Promoting good health. Portfolio. A2 (3 Units) Care practice and provision. You then choose 2 Options from a choice of these 6 titles. Understanding human behaviour. Anatomy and physiology in practice. Mental health issues. Social trends. Research methods in health and social care. Health & Social Care would go well with…. The course builds confidence, practical communications and teamwork skills and provides an excellent basis for training in medicine, social services and other similar areas. The distinguishing features of this A level subject is that students build and learn through experiences. Visits and work placements in Health and Social Care settings are part of this practical course. The units studied are all work related. This is a recognised A Level and acceptable for University entry. It is an essential qualification if you think you might work in the Health & Social Care sector.
