Physical Education The specification is based on the interaction between the theory and the practice of Physical Education. It takes a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry drawn from a wide range of disciplines, focusing on the performer and performance. The specification relates well to social and natural sciences but students must be aware that being good at sport is not enough to do well in the subject, as the theory content is demanding. Key features the new specification draws on well-established areas of study, but also acknowledges the contemporary view of PE and sport. The ongoing development of PE and sport is a dynamic one and the challenge has been to ensure that this specification reflects this. This has been achieved by allowing students to research and study sport in the local, national and international arenas. the student is very much at the centre of study. Students are encouraged to: review their current participation and performance in sport; identify local and national opportunities for them to advance this and, ultimately, create a life plan linked to sport participation and health. Course content Unit 1: Participation in Sport and Recreation The unit content is divided into two sections: the first investigates what constitutes a healthy and active lifestyle and the second considers how competitive sport has developed over time. - AS Level. Unit 2: The Critical Sports Performer The fundamental ethos for this unit is to engage participants in four tasks. This establishes a framework of opportunities to develop practical experiences and conduct independent research into the structure, provision and analysis of sport and physical activity. - AS Level. Unit 3: Preparation for Optimum Sports Performance Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of the short and long-term physiological and psychological preparations made by elite athletes. - A2 Level. Unit 4: The Developing Sports Performer Students will construct a development plan to further their performance as players, leaders or officials. - A2 Level. Prospects AS/A2 Physical Education is one of the fastest growing subjects on the curriculum. It provides an excellent foundation for students contemplating a career in teaching, nursing, the forces and leisure/recreation. Fact File Entry Requirements GCSE PE is not an entry requirement. CC in Science. C in English. Specification Edexcel Assessment 2 Module Tests and coursework for both AS and A2 PE would go well with Geography, Biology and many more subjects. PE may even provide some enjoyable relief from the arduous workload of sixth form life. This course will run subject to sufficient numbers of students opting for the course, availability of staff and restrictions imposed by the timetable. Physics Physics explores the workings of the universe from the tiniest subatomic particles to the great galaxies. It involves challenging problems in theory and practice. Physics is for people who like challenges, can think logically, understand complex ideas and apply them to the world. AS - 3 units assessed in year 12 Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves Unit 3 - Centre Assessed Unit. A2 - 3 units assessed in year 13 Unit 4 - Fields and Further Mechanics Unit 5 - Section A: Nuclear and Thermal Physics Section B: Optional Unit Unit 6 - Centre Assessed Unit From the smallest part of the human body to the great clusters of galaxies, physics helps us to understand how our world works. Prospects: Employers today actively seek out people who can prove their ability to think logically, understand complex ideas and apply them to the real world. Careers span everything from aeronautical engineer through meteorologist to radiographer. Your future matters. So if you have an enquiring mind, enjoy a challenge and like solving problems, give yourself the best chance by studying physics.
