Millom Sixth Form - Your Questions Answered Will I receive help in planning my time? Yes, as well as help with study skills in tutorial lessons, you will have a 6th form planner which will help you plan and record all your 6th form work. It will have a page a week diary and a number of other useful features to help you organise your time. Do I have to attend registration and assemblies? Yes, registration is a legal requirement and an essential feature of health and safety policy. It is also an important time for the transfer of information between tutors and students. You will be required to go to one assembly per week, currently on a Monday. It is part of the requirements of your contract that you attend all timetabled lessons and tutorials. Is there somewhere in school where I can study when not in lessons? Yes. As well as the school library there is a new 6th form study room in Ulpha building with ICT facilities careers and other reference books for sole use by 6th form students. Am I likely to go on educational visits out of school? Certainly. Nearly all subjects offer educational visits or field trips as part of their programme of study. Students visit universities, theatres, sites of geographical, scientific and historical interest - even Hindu temples. We believe that these stimulating experiences add a great deal to your understanding and enjoyment of the courses you study. Will I get good results? Millom Sixth Form A and AS results are consistently above the national average, continually improving and compare very favourably with other post 16 establishments in the area. Quality of teaching (as was noted by Ofsted) is excellent. The final and decisive factor in your success will be your own commitment to hard work. What about social events? 6th formers organise their own social events with staff support. What happens is limited only by the enthusiasm and commitment of you and your fellow students. Cinema, shopping and bowling trips, trips to concerts and football matches all take place. In addition there is a leaving event for year 13 and informal Christmas and end of term parties in the common room. Year 12 students are instrumental in running the Christmas Disco. Is there any opportunity for sport? Yes. There is a once a week recreational PE lesson for 6th formers. This is voluntary and there is a good choice of activities tailored to the interests of the students. We also run a highly successful Community Sports Leadership award. Is it true we get paid for attending? You will already have heard something about E.M.A’s (Educational Maintenance Allowances) which are awarded to students whose household income is below £30,000 per annum. We will give you detailed information about E.M.A’s at the 6th form information evening and all our year 11 students will be given information leaflets and application forms Can I expect any help after I have left? Yes. Our interest in you does not end when you leave. We are always available to offer references and to give further help and advice when we can. A number of past students have returned from work or university seeking careers or other advice. We will always try to help if we can. One regular service is to help place students in universities and colleges in the summer holidays after the A Level results. Sixth Form Registration Day There will be a Sixth Form Registration Day prior to the commencement of the Autumn term, and after the release of the GCSE examination results.
