making
transition to
league bowling

Laser tag. Check. Arcade.
Check. Black light mini-golf.
Check. Indoor go-karts. Check.
All these items are what you
may find at an amusement
park, but these attractions can
all be found at Shenaniganz.
Shenaniganz, which opened in
December of 2008, is a Family-fun
Entertainment center in
Rockwall, Texas that includes
the aforementioned amenities
as well as Rozie’s Grill, a fullservice
restaurant, rock climbing,
billiards, shuffleboard and
bowling. But it’s the bowling
that has gone full-circle amidst
all the fun.
Shenaniganz is owned by
the Ripp family and run by the
three oldest brothers who serve
as managing partners. Before
opening Shenaniganz, the Ripp
family researched some of the
best bowling/entertainment
venues across the country
before deciding to open their
business. One of those brothers
is Parker Coddington, who has
always remembered his father’s
words.
“Our dad is a physician
and he always preached to us
about working for yourself,”
Coddington said. “Our family
is very competitive with
everything including games, so
we wanted to open a business
where family and fun would be
included.”
Coddington didn’t have a
lot of experience within the
bowling industry, but knew the
center was missing something.
It wasn’t long before he decided
to take on the challenge of
adding league bowling to what
is not your typical bowling
center. However, there were
reasons why the family waited
before adding leagues.
“First of all our experience
was very limited,” Coddington
said. “We didn’t know much
about the industry and we
wanted to wait, get our feet
wet, and gain some experience
before we felt the time was
right to introduce league bowling.
We wanted to do it the
right way. Our first sanctioned

The Scorpion Championship
is one of the five animal
pattern events conducted as
part of the PBA World Series of
Bowling and will be followed
by ESPN telecasts of the GEICO
Shark Championships (Dec.
26). The “USA vs. “The World”
team event on Jan. 9 will
conclude the WSOB telecasts at
12 p.m. Central on ESPN.

Thoughts on your big night?
I was actually a little tired but
really focused. I bowl in this
Friday league with my wife,
so I know that I need to bowl
good. I owe a lot of the credit
for my success to her; she is
very supportive of my bowling.
I need to get her out there
bowling more tournaments.
What ball did you throw?
The Storm Reign Supreme, this
has been my go-to ball, and it
helps to be on the Storm staff.
It is a very predictable ball that
is easy to read; I have more
confidence in that ball than
any ball I throw.
Who drills your balls? I do,
I have been in the Pro Shop
business for almost 20 years, I
manage the pro shop at AMF
Garland
What is your all-time
favorite bowling ball? The Storm
El Nino, that was the ball I shot
the 868 with. I actually got the
ball from Kelly Ray, he didn’t
like it, so I slugged the thumb
and took it from there.
What is your average in this
league? 241
What is your all-time high
average? High book average is
235 at AMF Desoto in 1998.
How long have you been
bowling? Since I was 14 and I’m
40 now, so quite a few years.
My mom and dad were big
bowlers; my mother actually
had the high female series in
Japan in the 60’s with a 781.
My dad was in the military and
I was born in Japan.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? I would have to go with
Jason Couch, I love the way he
throws the ball.
Most memorable bowling
moment? When I won my first
Junior tournament in Virginia,
it was a 5-day event that was
held in five different houses.
I was so nervous in the final
match, you could hear my
knees knocking, I had to strike
in the tenth to win the match,

and I did, but I was so nervous
I’m not sure how I did.
Chris’s tip of the week: Make
sure that you have a nice loose
arm-swing. The key is to make
sure that the ball comes off
your hand free and easy. If it

been O’Neill’s strong suit.
In fact, it took him a little
over four years and a dozen
unsuccessful television
appearances before his
breakthrough victory in the
2009 Chameleon Championship
in Allen Park, MI.
“When I make a TV show
now, I have a better idea of
what to expect,” O’Neill said.
“Today I knew the other guys
were going to try to hook the
lanes a lot, so I decided to do
just the opposite, and it wound
up perfect.
“When your opponents give
you an opening, you have to
put them on their heels. You
have to dig deep and throw
a double, and not let them get
back into the match. That’s
something I wasn’t able to do
before. I’d get too excited and
throw the ball through the
break point and leave a 2-8-10.
So I’ve learned to gear down,
take a deep breath.
“It was a matter of getting
used to the TV environment,”
he said. “Before, I’d wonder
if it was going to be my
last show, that I had to win
because I might never make
another telecast. But you can’t
bowl like that. Now I figure
I’ll have 100 more times like
this. I bowl a lot smarter.
Getting that first title is huge.
Even a guy like Pete (Weber),
who has a million titles, has
struggled of late. No matter
where you are in your career,
it’s going to happen.
“A year ago I had no titles
and I kept putting pressure
on myself,” O’Neill continued.
“Now I have three. It’s pretty
cool. But the one I want
to win is the PBA World
Championship. Everyone wants
to win majors, and winning
that one would put me in a
good place in the Player of the
Year race.
“Player of the Year is a
huge goal for me, especially
after coming so close last year.
Chris Barnes and Tommy
Jones actually came up with
a nickname for me last year:
“Nice Run.” They called me
that for about six months, so
I need to put that nickname to
rest.”
During the World Series
of Bowling, O’Neill qualified
among the top 16 for match
play in four of the five “animal
pattern” segments, and earned
the No. 1 stepladder position for
the PBA World Championship
finals which will be televised
live on ESPN2 and ESPN on
Jan. 14, 15 and 16 from South
Point Bowling Center. He also
qualified for the stepladder finals
in the Scorpion Championship,
which airs on ESPN on Dec. 19,
and as a member of the United
States team for the USA vs. The
World telecast on Jan. 9.

Costa Rica’s beautiful,
but a bit scary

early experiences and thoughts
about his new Central America
home.

My recent trip to Costa Rica
gave me the biggest scare of
my life, or awfully close to it.
Kenny, his daughter Leigh
Ann and I had a flight to San
Jose at 4 p.m. on a Sunday
afternoon. We arrived at D-FW
in plenty of time. But there was
a check-in baggage problem.
Kenny thought he had
plenty of time until he realized

was panic time.
Kenny had to
run with a large
bag to turn in his
rent car and go
through security.
He probably had Jim Woodruff
never run that
far, that fast, there was no
way he was going to make it, I
thought.
Meanwhile, I had to board,
because of the baggage woes,
Leigh Ann could not board
without Kenny.
It was nearing take-off, and
Leigh Ann and Kenny were not
there, She was told the plane
waits for nobody. Only seconds

I could imagine what I
would do if I went to Costa
Rica by myself. What could I
possibly do?
But I was saved by the bell.
Kenny miraculously made it
seconds before they closed the
door. I will never know how he
did it.
It was the worst
predicament I have ever been
involved in. i wanted my
mommy.
I figured things could not
get worse, but they did,a week
later, several people not too
far from us were killed in a
mudslide. They had been told
to get the hell out of there, but
they refused to leave, the heavy
rains messed up our TV and
electricity.
Things are getting much
better. You can’t imagine the
majestic beauty of San Jose
with the clouds resting on the
mountain tops.
Everything is so green with
picture post card card beauty.
Traffic is unbelievable, all
the streets are narrow with an
abundance of pot-holes, all the
drivers honk all the time, at
what I will never know. You
could not pay me enough to try
to drive here.
It is amazing how few
accidents they have. Very few,
and there are about as many
motorcycles as cars.
Their malls are much like
ours. Except they are busier.
What really catches your
eye, except for the beauty of
the place, is that each shop
provides its own security, and
each guard has his own gun.
Loaded, and I would bet he
knows how to use it.

The family knew they
needed someone to help them
create their league base and
help them through the transition
period. They decided to
partner with Randy Harris.
Harris who brings over 35
years of bowling experience
in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area
to his new position as league
director for Shenaniganz, and
has spent many valuable years
as a league director for AMF.
Harris has several goals in
mind for the league program at
Shenaniganz, beginning with
the youth program which is
very important.
“We definitely want to get
our youth program up and
running,” Harris said. “The
youth bowlers will be the next
adult bowlers. The youth are
very excited, and we also are
looking at the possibility of
holding high school bowling
matches here as well.”
To get a feel for how their
efforts would take shape,
Shenaniganz have and will
continue to host small tournaments
to gauge what their
bowlers want and need. They
held a nine-pin no-tap tournament
during Thanksgiving
and also plan to hold a scratch
marathon tournament, youth

tournament. By September,
Harris would like to have six
to eight leagues including
youth, scratch, mixed, men and
women.
“We are in the process of
hosting a couple tournaments,”
said Harris, who is also
looking to start adult leagues
during “primetime”. We want
to get regular bowlers and
experienced league bowlers in
the building to see the center
and what it has to offer. I
would like to have 400 league
bowlers next season.”
Along with the many
tournaments on-deck, they
are also looking to build short
season, small leagues that may
carry over into the summer
months to gauge participation.
And with the closing of
Big Town and Jupiter near
Rockwall, Texas, the needs
of league bowlers have risen
and Shenaniganz is open for
business.
They are also looking
at the possibility of several
benefit packages and promotions
for league bowlers.
Coddington has already begun
to incorporate some of their
brainstorming ideas during
Shenaniganz’s Tuesday night
league. In the weeks leading
up to Thanksgiving, bowlers
that rolled strikes in the third,
sixth and ninth frames during
their second game received a
free turkey.
Other potential league
promotions and benefits
include the mystery score
pot, strike pot tickets and the
plinko game. There is also the
possibility of a children’s care
package that may include ride
discounts for children who
come to the center with their
parents during league.
“One of our goals is to
improve the league experience
beyond what you see on the
surface,” Coddington said.
“League bowlers bring their
families along with them. At
Shenaniganz, they have the
opportunity to eat together
if they choose, and there are
other options for the kids while
the parents bowl.”
While the blueprint has
been mapped out, Harris
knows that this will be a work
in progress.
“I am very confident that
we will succeed,” Harris said.
“We must make sure we stay
committed long-term and work
through our commitment. I
have confident that we will
bring in bowlers and it will
take the same effort to retain
them.”

World Champion! When you
hear that term you immediately
think about the New York
Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys,
Los Angeles Lakers, and now
Cutter Cain!
Who is Cutter Cain? Well
he is my five year old nephew
who just won the 2010 World
Championship of Dummy Roping
in the 5 and under division
in Las Vegas last weekend.
I had not had a chance to
watch him compete so when it
worked out where I was going
to Reno for the PBA Regional
RPI tournament the same
weekend it was a no brainer
that we would divert south for
a couple of extra days.
There were over 80 other
kids competing and by the end
of the 4th round of sudden
death it was down to 3 of the
little wranglers.
In the sudden death portion
the kids had to rope full size
horns from 6 feet away. To
make it more difficult they had
to rope “slick horns” which
means you must rope the horns
only, and not the head.
Cutter nailed it and was
then crowned World Champion.
For his winning he won a
brand new saddle, belt buckle,
vest, ball cap, and several new
ropes.
Since mom and dad are both
champions as well I would assume
we will be watching him
for many years to come.
As I sit here in Las Vegas I
am getting ready for the biggest
tournament of the year for me.
The PBA Regional Players
Invitational is the Super Bowl
for the Southwest Region. The
top 25 point leaders from each
region are invited to the tournament,
and the top 5 receive
airfare and accommodations at
the Sands Regency in Reno as
well as an automatic entry in
to the RPI Tour Exemptions.
The way it will work is
seven players who have paid
the extra entry and who finish
in the top 16 will receive the
PBA Tour exemptions.
I feel like I have had a good
year, but I still did not accomplish
my goal of shooting a 300
and getting the coveted PBA
300 ring. A ringing 10 pin in
Colorado for 299 was as close
as I got.
I did reach my goal of finishing
in the top 5, but so far I
have not won a tournament as
a member so I still don’t have
the banner yet.
I would like to congratulate
Chris Hibbitts II for again leading
the RPI and Bowler of the
Year points for the Southwest
Region.
I really think he deserves

wish I had a vote!
My final topic of 2010 will
be the latest disaster of the
dogs.
Since my neighbor continued
to complain I had to start
keeping the dogs inside. If you
have seen my couch you would
understand just how risky this
is.
Lexi had been doing great
for several days, but just when
we thought we were in the
clear I came home from work
and Lexi decided to have
Christmas a little early.
She ripped open one of the
gifts that my wife searched for
all over town for her friend and
Lexi chewed them up.
I hated to make that phone
call to my wife, but to my
surprise she handled better
than expected.
So we purchased another
metal crate and were going to
try and contain her. On the
third day of escaping from the
crate I decided that I would
completely zip tie and chain
the entire gate.
To my surprise I got home
that day ready to celebrate
victory, but she was right there
at the door to greet me.
She not only escaped, but
she broke the side of the crate
that didn’t even have a door.
I literally have no idea how
to contain her, and have no
idea what the next steps are.
Since this is the final article
of the year I just want to say
how much I have enjoyed
sharing my opinions and
stories with all of you as this
concludes an entire calendar
year of articles.
You may like them or you
may not, but hopefully they are
entertaining.
Of course if you don’t
like them then you probably
aren’t reading this far down
anyway. But I do want to wish
all of you and your families a
happy holiday season, and safe
travels to wherever you may be
heading.

Association’s ESPN telecasts
from the World Series of
Bowling have unveiled a new
“Arsenal” feature to help viewers
understand players’ bowling
ball selection strategies.
During the practice session
of each PBA Tour telecast, the
name of each bowling ball
model a given player is using
is documented and assigned a
“hook rating number” between
1 and 10, with 10 being the
ball that will hook the most.
During the actual competition,
a graphic will appear for each
player, with the ball he is
currently using and its “hook
rating number” highlighted.
“Reporting on every player’s
bowling ball arsenal and
attaching a hook rating to each
of the balls is one of the most
significant enhancements to
this year’s PBA telecasts,” said
PBA Deputy Commissioner
Tom Clark. “By outlining and
describing the players’ equipment
alternatives, the feature
not only lets the fans at home
inside the players’ bowling
bags, but helps them better
understand the reasons behind
the critical decisions made on
every show.”
The “Arsenal” feature also
provides color analyst Randy
Pedersen with a reference point
when a player changes from
an aggressive ball to one that
hooks less, or vice versa, and
makes that transition easier
for a viewer to understand.
