It’s been a busy couple of months on the
social scene here in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Since the beginning of August there’s
been a fundraiser or some other social event
nearly every weekend. October looks to be a
busy month as well!
The Closet on Main
California Senator Sharon Runner paid a
recent visit to The Closet on Main and visited
with the volunteers and founder Margo Hudson
as well as Single Mothers Outreach Executive
Director DaAnne Smith. The Closet on
Main is a classy boutique located in trendy
downtown Newhall that sells new and gently
Among the volunteers who poured wine for guests
of Vine2Wine to benefit Circle of Hope, Inc. cancer
support group were Dana MacCaughtry, Lisa Ballentine
and Amanda Etcheverry.
The 20th annual Silents Under the Stars, held Aug. 8
at William S. Hart Park in Newhall, attracted a large
crowd to support The Friends of Hart Park. Among
those who attended were Bob and Diane Benjamin
and Diana Vose and Ernest Guaderrama.
used upscale clothing. The store benefits Single
Mothers Outreach, a Santa Clarita Valley
nonprofit that provides families with donated
food, emergency housing placement,
donated clothing, free backpacks filled with
school supplies, and critical social service resources
for mothers struggling with basic living
skills or mental illness. The Closet on
Main is located at 24335 Main St. in Newhall.
Ventura Farmer’s Market at College
of the Canyons
If you haven’t found the Ventura Farmer’s
Market in parking lot 8 on Sunday mornings
at College of the Canyons you’re missing a
great change to buy some spectacular products
direct from the source. Farm to table is
all the rage and the Farmer’s Market at COC
now will offer fresh seafood from Joe
Tomasello, of Bluewater Seafood Company.
Tomasello learned how to be a fisherman
from his Italian grandfather and has been in
the seafood industry for more than 35 years.
Each item sold at Bluewater is FDA HACCP inspected
seafood and all products are fresh
and caught locally throughout the Pacific
Ocean. Shoppers can find California Coast live
clams, mussels, oysters, halibut and more.
Fresh selections are also available from the
Alaskan coast and the Hawaiian Islands. One
of the most unique products is a local Santa
Barbara Sea Urchin, known as Uni. And, the
most popular fish is the Chinook King Salmon
followed by the Pacific Halibut. Wild salmon
is my favorite! The Santa Clarita Farmers’
Market is part of the Ventura County Certified
Farmers’ Market Association. For more information,
Circle of Hope and Vine2Wine
Last month’s story in The Westside Reader
about SCV charities revealed what I’ve known
for a long time about Circle of Hope, Inc.; Ex-
Volunteers Judy Penman and Sharon Linquest
poured wine for Reyes Winery at Vine2Wine to benefit
Circle of Hope, Inc.
Left to right, Cheri Fleming, Griselda Kreitzman, Don Fleming and Jeffrey Kreitzman at Heart of the West.
ecutive Director Ray Tippet is an unpaid volunteer.
Kudos to Tippet for his amazing dedication
for a great cause. Circle of Hope
recently raised more than $30,000 at its
Vine2Wine event to assist those with cancer
who live, work or seek treatment in the SCV.
Circle of Hope started as a nonprofit to help
those battling breast cancer, but has recently
expanded to work with individuals battling
an array of reproductive cancers and colon
Auctioneers gone wild
I enjoy the antics of the auctioneers at the
various charity fundraisers around town.
Have you noticed how hard Mark Drilling of
Stokes Auction Group and his crew work during
an auction? Just sayin’.
