RYAN GRIGSON NOTES GENERAL MANAGER RYAN GRIGSON Years in NFL: 15th Year Colts General Manager: 2nd Year In his first season as the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, Ryan Grigson served as the architect of a team that generated one of the biggest turnarounds in franchise and NFL history. Having turned over nearly 70 percent of the roster from the 2011 campaign, Grigson constructed an 11-5 team that reached the AFC Playoffs. The nine-win turnaround from the previous season is tied for the third-largest in league history. With the success came many accolades for Grigson, including Executive of the Year honors from PFW/PFWA and The Sporting News. He was also honored with the Drew Brees Mental Toughness Award by the National Football Foundation in June of 2013. Inheriting a team that had gone 2-14 in 2011, Grigson’s first acquisition was the hiring of Head Coach Chuck Pagano. After working in conjunction with Pagano to assemble a 19-member coaching staff, Grigson completed more than 250 transactions in his first season to fortify the roster. With limited resources available in the 2012 offseason, he used his industrious nature to bolster a young team by retaining key veteran leadership such as Reggie Wayne, Robert Mathis and Cory Redding. Grigson also demonstrated his innovation by acquiring talent from other leagues, such as the AFL, IFL, UFL and CFL. A total of eight players (six through free agency and two through trades) became starters for the Colts last year. Grigson’s first draft class was headlined by Andrew Luck, who set NFL rookie marks in passing yards (4,374), attempts (627), 300- yard games (six) and single-game yards (433). Luck directed 11 wins as a starter, two shy of the NFL rookie record, and his seven comeback wins tied the most by any quarterback since 1970. In addition to reaching the playoffs, Luck, along with Mathis and Wayne, earned Pro Bowl nods. Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, T.Y. Hilton, Vick Ballard (the club’s leading rusher) and LaVon Brazill combined to help the draft class produce 3,108 scrimmage yards, the highest total by any NFL rookie class since 1970. Prior to 2012, the last team to have rookies lead a squad in rushing and passing was the 1943 New York Giants. Indianapolis rookies combined to start in 56 games, which ranked second to the Cleveland Browns (87). The team’s astonishing success in 2012 came despite numerous obstacles. Indianapolis transitioned to new offensive and defensive schemes and placed 13 players on Injured Reserve. However, the most challenging hurdle for the Colts was the loss of Pagano for 12 weeks during the regular season as he battled leukemia. The Colts responded by rallying around their ailing head coach to win nine of their last 11 games to finish second in the AFC South and earn the AFC’s fifth playoff seed. By season’s end, only 16 players remained from 2011. The Colts were also playing with nine rookies and 33 players with three-or-fewer years of NFL experience. Indianapolis became the second team in NFL history to win 10-ormore games after losing 14-or-more the previous season and totaled a 9-1 record in games decided by one possession or less during 2012’s historic campaign. The Colts were just the third NFL team to make the playoffs one year after going 2-14 or worse and became the fourth team to win at least 10 games after a season of two-or-fewer victories. Of 37 NFL teams in history to have lost 14- or-more games in a season, the Colts were just the sixth to bounce back with a winning record. Following the 2012 season, Grigson had an aggressive and succinct approach to signing veteran talent through free agency. His work yielded successful and productive players such as: RB-Ahmad Bradshaw, T-Gosder Cherilus, DT-Aubrayo Franklin, QB-Matt Hasselbeck, WR-Darrius Heyward-Bey, DT-Ricky Jean Francois, S- LaRon Landry, LB-Lawrence Sidbury, G-Donald Thomas, CB-Greg Toler and LB-Erik Walden. Prior to the start of the 2013 season, the free agent class represented a combined 863 regular season games played (534 starts), four Pro Bowl selections, seven conference championship game appearances and four Super Bowl appearances. 14 Grigson also executed two trades during the 2013 offseason. The first came with the Philadelphia Eagles as the Colts acquired fullback Stanley Havili in exchange for defensive end Clifton Geathers. Indianapolis then made a trade with Buffalo, which sent linebacker Jerry Hughes to the Bills in exchange for linebacker Kelvin Sheppard. Sheppard, a third-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, started his first two seasons for Buffalo. In the 2013 NFL Draft, Grigson used seven selections to address needs on the offensive and defensive lines as well as providing depth at skill positions. With the team’s first-round pick, the Colts added Florida State outside linebacker Bjoern Werner, a unanimous All-America selection and ACC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 13.0 sacks in 2012. The selections of guard Hugh Thornton (third-round) and center/guard Khaled Holmes (fourth-round) will make an immediate impact on the offensive line. The Colts traded up to acquire defensive tackle Montori Hughes (fifth-round). Hughes, along with safety John Boyett (sixthround), running back Kerwynn Williams (seventh-round) and tight end Justice Cunningham (seventh-round), will provide significant depth at their position groups. MAKING TRADES Ryan Grigson has completed 16 trades since being hired as General Manager in January of 2012. Current Colts players on the 53- man activer roster acquired through trade have gone on to appear in 96 combined games for the team, making 43 starts. A few notable players acquired through trade include: Cornerback Vontae Davis - In 2012, totaled 53 tackles (40 solo), seven passes defensed and three interceptions. Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after intercepting two passes vs. Houston (12/30/12). Fullback Stanley Havili - Appeared in seven games (five starts) in 2013 and helped block for the Colts to record four straight 100-plus rushing yard games to open the season for the first time since 1988. Wide Receiver T.Y. Hilton - Colts traded up in the 2012 NFL Draft to acquire Hilton. Posted five 100-yard receiving performances in 2012, a Colts rookie record. Running Back Trent Richardson - Third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Scored a rushing touchdown in each of his first two games as a member of the Colts. Inside Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard - Has appeared in eight games (three starts) in 2013 and has totaled 20 tackles (11 solo), 1.0 sack and one pass defensed. NEVER-ENDING SEARCH Ryan Grigson not only finds players through college and NFL scouting, but also searches for talent in several other leagues across the world. Since 2012, Grigson has signed 12 players from the Canadian Football League, Areana Football League, Indoor Football League and United Football League. Grigson has also reached outside of football into Super 15 Rugby, the highest level of pro rugby in the world. Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman (CFL) and long snapper Matt Overton (IFL, UFL) continue to make significant contributions on the active roster, while Daniel Adongo (Super 15 Rugby) resides on the practice squad. In 2012, Freeman set a franchise record and ranked fifth in the NFL with 203 tackles for the season. He also became the first undrafted Colts player to return an interception for a touchdown in his debut. In 2013, Freeman already has 3.5 sacks for the season and became only the fourth undrafted Colts player to record 2.0-or-more sacks in a game when he did so against Miami (9/15). Overton has appeared in all 24 games since 2012, handling snapping duties for punter Pat McAfee and kicker Adam Vinatieri. In 2012, he snapped for McAfee to set franchise records in punting average (48.2), net punting average (40.3), punts inside the 20 (26) and 50.0-yard gross average games (five).
ROBERT MATHIS NOTES USE THE FORCE Robert Mathis has totaled 103.0 career sacks in his 11-year career with the Colts, which ranks second in club history behind Dwight Freeney’s 107.5. In 2005, he registered a sack in 11-of-13 games and set an NFL record with sacks in eight consecutive contests to start a season. Mathis has 25 multiple-sack games in his career and three 3.0-plus sack games. He had a streak of four consecutive multiple-sack games this season from Weeks 2-5. Dating back to his rookie season in 2003, Robert Mathis leads the Colts defense in forced fumbles with 42, which ranks first in the NFL during that time span. SACK STREAK Robert Mathis recorded a sack in eight consecutive games ending with the Colts’ 2012 Week 9 contest against Miami, tying his personal best for his career. The streak dates back to the final three games of the 2011 season through the first five games he played in 2012. His previous eight-game sack streak came in the first eight games of the 2005 season. Dwight Freeney also had a nine-game sack streak from December 18, 2008 through November 8, 2009. DOUBLE-DIGIT SACKS In 11 NFL seasons, Robert Mathis has totaled five double-digit sack seasons.
