Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Surgical Oncology and Consultant Surgeon at the <strong>University</strong><br />
Hospital <strong>of</strong> South Manchester and Christie Hospital, Manchester. He has<br />
research interests in preinvasive cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ), breast<br />
cancer chemoprevention and innovations in service delivery. His research in<br />
Manchester was recognised by the Royal College <strong>of</strong> Surgeons <strong>of</strong> England<br />
when he was appointed a Hunterian Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in 1995. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Bundred has a large clinical commitment in the Manchester Breast Centre,<br />
the largest breast unit in the United Kingdom. He is a member <strong>of</strong> several<br />
medical societies and has been awarded numerous honours including a<br />
Patey Prize and Ronald Raven Award. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bundred has authored or coauthored<br />
over 160 peer-reviewed articles and his work has appeared in<br />
many journals, including the Journal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>National</strong> Cancer Institute, The<br />
Lancet, Cancer Research and Cancer. He is Chief Investigator on several<br />
clinical trials both nationally and internationally and he has published<br />
extensively on adjuvant therapy for breast cancer.<br />
Hugh Bishop qualified at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> London (the Middlesex Hospital)<br />
in 1970. He trained as a General Surgeon in Birmingham, Derby and Oxford.<br />
He was a Research Fellow to Roger Blamey in <strong>Nottingham</strong>, and wrote a thesis<br />
on oestrogen receptors in the 70s. Subsequently, a consultant at the George<br />
Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, and thereafter at the Royal Bolton Hospital.<br />
Closely involved in the production <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Breast Surgery<br />
guidelines in terms <strong>of</strong> the management <strong>of</strong> symptomatic breast cancer, bone<br />
metastases and, more recently, the ABS Guidance on Oncoplastic Surgical<br />
Practice. Initiated the ABS/NHS Breast Surgical Audit. Initially, this was a<br />
shambles but, thanks to the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit, has<br />
become one <strong>of</strong> the most powerful audits <strong>of</strong> surgical screening activity in the<br />
world. From this he developed the Sloane Project, an audit <strong>of</strong> non-invasive<br />
screen detected breast cancer. He was President <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Breast<br />
Surgery in 2005-2007.<br />
