Mairéad Lyons has recently joined the Irish Cancer Society from a
Government advisory position as Director of the National Advisory
Committee on Drugs. Mairéad has a long and varied career in healthcare in
the public, voluntary and private sector for over 25years. Whilst originally
training as a general nurse, Mairéad went on to train in Public Relations, in
Health Promotion and in Health Service Management. Mairéad brings to this
new post a range of skills and experience in collaborative working, strategic
development, operations management and research. She will lead and
manage the Society's programme areas, of Health Promotion, Cancer
Information Services including Night Nursing, Travel Assistance and Financial
Hardship Grants and Patient Support Services delivering on existing
programmes around prevention, early detection and fighting cancer as well
as managing strategic targets and developing innovative new services for
those affected by cancer.
Dr. Ann O’Doherty was appointed Clinical Director, BreastCheck Merrion unit,
Consultant Radiologist St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group in 1999. Prior to this
she was Clinical Director, Eastern Board Breast Screening Service from 1989 –
1999 and Quality Assurance Director, Quality Assurance Radiologist Northern
Ireland Breast Screening Programme. Dr. O’Doherty has a specific interest in
non-operative diagnosis of breast cancer and optimal multidisciplinary
management of breast cancer and has extensive experience in symptomatic
and screening mammography. Dr. O’Doherty was author of the 2008 Report
on a clinical review of mammography service at the Midland Regional
Hospital Portlaoise for the HSE Dublin Mid-Leinster and co author of the
report for Symptomatic Breast Services Commissioned by National Cancer
Form 2000. Dr. O’Doherty was a member of the Quality Assurance Committee
appointed by An Táiniste to produce Guidelines and Performance Indicators
for Symptomatic Screening and is a Member of National Quality Assurance
Committee for Breast Cancer Screening.
