Robert Mansel is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Surgery at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wales College <strong>of</strong><br />
Medicine, Cardiff. He was formerly Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Surgery in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Manchester from 1989-1992. He trained in London, Swindon and Cardiff after<br />
graduating from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School. He spent one year in<br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Texas as an UICC Clinical Fellow. His major interests are in<br />
benign breast disease, new techniques in breast cancer surgery and breast<br />
reconstruction. He was the elected Chairman <strong>of</strong> the British Association <strong>of</strong><br />
Surgical Oncology Breast Group from 1998 to 2002 and serves on many<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Health Committees including the Cancer Subgroup <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Clinical Outcomes Group and the Primary Care Referral Group. He is a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Committee and the Cancer<br />
Committee <strong>of</strong> the Royal College <strong>of</strong> Surgeons <strong>of</strong> England. He holds many<br />
research grants from major grant giving bodies such as the MRC, CRC and<br />
R&D Offices <strong>of</strong> both England and Wales. His research interests include spread<br />
<strong>of</strong> cancers, service changes in breast cancer management and sentinel node<br />
biopsy techniques in breast cancer and melanoma. He is the principal<br />
investigator <strong>of</strong> the UK trial <strong>of</strong> sentinel node biopsy (the ALMANAC trial). He<br />
has lectured widely on these topics and in recent years has given<br />
eponymous lectures in Scandinavia, France and India. He was Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />
the Editorial Committee, which produced the first revision <strong>of</strong> the NICE breast<br />
guidelines in 2002. He is currently Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Surgery at<br />
Cardiff <strong>University</strong>. He is a past President <strong>of</strong> the British Association <strong>of</strong> Surgical<br />
Oncology. He was awarded a CBE in 2006 for services to Surgery.<br />
Mr. Terence J. Boyle. Consultant General Surgeon & Lead Breast Surgeon, St.<br />
James’s Hospital. -Mr. Terry Boyle is Consultant General Surgeon and Lead<br />
Breast Surgeon at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. Since his initial appointment to<br />
the Hospital in 1998, Mr. Boyle has been an integral member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Multidisciplinary Breast Care Team at St. James’s. He played a key role in the<br />
processes involved in the confirmation <strong>of</strong> St. James’s Hospital as a designated<br />
Specialist Unit for the management <strong>of</strong> Symptomatic Breast Diseases. Mr.<br />
Boyle has lead a Hospital initiative to integrate Breast Care services in the<br />
Institution, with a single,‘stand alone’ facility to cater for all aspects <strong>of</strong> breast<br />
disease, from rapid access and diagnosis to therapy based on<br />
multidisciplinary planning, access for all to information and assessment<br />
regarding breast reconstruction, access to assessment, counselling and<br />
genetics clinics for those at high risk <strong>of</strong> developing breast cancer, the<br />
availability <strong>of</strong> psychological support and the ongoing availability <strong>of</strong> general<br />
support services such as prosthesis fitting, psychosexual support and social<br />
services. Mr. Boyle qualified from <strong>University</strong> College Dublin in 1985. He has<br />
maintained a keen interest in Surgical Oncology since and has worked<br />
during his training and as a Consultant in a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>’s Specialist<br />
Breast Units. Mr. Boyle completed an International Research Fellowship in<br />
Surgical Oncology at Duke <strong>University</strong>, North Carolina and a Clinical<br />
Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at The Hammersmith Hospital, London prior<br />
to returning to complete his training in <strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />
