Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Philip J Drew is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor / Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon<br />
within the Hull York Medical School. He qualified from St Mary’s Hospital,<br />
London in 1990. He was awarded an MD with honours from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Hull for his thesis on the clinical application <strong>of</strong> breast MRI and a MS from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> London for his work on artificial neural networks and<br />
prognostication. His clinical training was in London, Yorkshire (as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Kerin’s lecturer) and the Cardiff Breast Unit. His team’s breast research<br />
interests include the immunology and genetics <strong>of</strong> breast cancer including<br />
proteomic investigation <strong>of</strong> mechanisms <strong>of</strong> radio/chemoresistance, prediction<br />
<strong>of</strong> outcome with artificial intelligence techniques and applications <strong>of</strong> MRI.<br />
With support from his NHS colleagues his clinical activity includes an<br />
extensive oncoplastic breast practice which has provided opportunities for<br />
qualitative research and the development <strong>of</strong> novel surgical techniques. He<br />
has previously been awarded a Hunterian Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship from the Royal<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Surgeons <strong>of</strong> England. He has produced more than 100 academic<br />
papers and contributed to several books on breast surgery. He acts as<br />
surgical advisor to the randomised multicentre UK HTA trial <strong>of</strong> comparing<br />
MRI and mammographic planning for breast conserving surgery (COMICE)<br />
and the recently approved NEO-COMICE trial.<br />
Dr. Kennedy holds the position as Consultant Medical Oncologist at St<br />
James’s Hospital and St. Lukes Hospital and Director <strong>of</strong> the Cancer Clinical<br />
Trials Consortium at St James's Hospital. Dr. Kennedy holds a Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Medicine, a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Surgery and a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Obstetrics from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dublin, Trinity College where he was awarded a first class<br />
degree and won the university Gold Medal in 1983. His training took him<br />
from <strong>Ireland</strong> to the United States where he began a Clinical Fellowship in<br />
Oncology at the renowned Johns Hopkins <strong>University</strong> in Baltimore in 1987<br />
and rose to the position <strong>of</strong> Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Oncology before returning<br />
to <strong>Ireland</strong> in 1998. He is the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Irish Clinical Oncology Research<br />
Group (ICORG), immediate past Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Irish Society for Medical<br />
Oncology, and Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Medical Committee <strong>of</strong> the Irish Cancer<br />
Society. His major research interest is in breast cancer.
