Prizes to 500 pairs OUR club hosted the second of our weekend five hundred tournaments on Sunday, September 6. Sponsored by Zelows Travel Goods and our Monday night players, the event attracted more than 20 local and visiting pairs. As usual the event was competitive and friendly as competitors played 21 12-minute games. At 4pm, event organiser Bob Pointon handed out prizes to pairs. Steve Boys and Marguerite Larkin started well and held a lead throughout to win comfortably with 42 points followed by Pam Tebbutt and Brian Garland with 39, Val Hatley and Bill Garrard with 35, Alf Drewett and David Death 32, Dennis Bullimore and Clare Alford 29, Bruno Luchetta and Ennio Chies 27, David Ridgway and Julie Lindsay 26, Elaine Denman and Kathy Harlow 26, Georgie Donaldson and Lizzy Heart 25, Glennis Dolan and June Faith 25 and Daphne Feron and Kevin O’Neill 25. The club always supplies a gift pack at our tournaments and this one was won by Kevin O’Neill. – D.R. Redcliffe Old Boys hit boards OUR September social was a sensational night of sport, laughs and great company at the home of the Redcliffe Dart Associations. We were treated exceptionally well by our hosts. Their members were gracious in accepting our ability to throw darts was very limited (except for a couple of us). A special thank-you to Patty for organising everything and for tending the bar all night. Although not an official Old Boys function, a few of us and partners headed out to Surat to catch up with long-time member Michael (Fester) Clanchy. We also ran into a few former Old Boys and former Redcliffe residents who just happened to be in the same place at the same time. One downside was one of the partners complained that she was so sore from laughing too much. Should be more of it I reckon. It just happened to also be the weekend of the Annual Surat Cup race meeting. Redcliffe was also represented there by its number one jockey in Lyall Appo. This month on the 18th we host the Wynnum Old Boys for a lawn bowls competition at Scarborough Bowls Club. We will be playing for the Ron Pascoe Shield. If anyone is interested in joining us for the day contact Happy Manning on 0409 362642. Our annual dinner is on Saturday, November 14. Again, numbers to Happy as soon as possible. As this is catered for us by the fabulous crew at the Leagues Club, we need to finalise numbers by November 7. No tickets will be available after that date. Christmas tree nomination forms for children’s presents will also be sent out to members shortly. The presents will be delivered by Santa after our AGM in December. CLUB BACKS SETTLEMENT FOURS THE Redcliffe Leagues Club has once again sponsored the Settlement Fours tournament at Scarborough Bowls Club. Winners were the Vaceao team with 12 games plus 26 with the Laverty team runners-up with 10 games and 52 points. Third prize went to Bob Ritchie’s team with 10 games plus 32 and fourth to Phil Harding’s team with two games and 37. The first day margin was taken out by Ray Elford’s team of six plus 34 and the second day the McVinish team with six plus 23. Green can only see blue skies ahead FIRST-YEAR coach Daniel Green can’t wait for the 2016 season to roll around. Far from being disappointed at his BRL A grade side being tipped out in an elimination semi, Green can only see positives. “I’m happy with how the season ended up,” he said. “I see my role as filtering players through to first grade, not so much as winning premierships. “And the improvement I saw in the players that came back to me and then returned to first grade was very gratifying.” And Green had some numbers to work with. A staggering 42 players turned out in the red and white in the BRL A grade. “That is a very high number no matter what way you look at it and means you virtually have a different side every weekend,” he said. “We did not have a core group of players to base our game on but as a first year coach I saw the development of the players we fielded.” Green was quick to single out Ash Harawira as his player of the season. The unheralded 22-year-old played virtually every position bar the halves, putting in whole-hearted performances. “I saw Ash play at the back end of last season when I was helping out Pine Rivers,” Green said. “He blew me away this season because in every position he played in he did the job. The attitude he has, the way he treats people and approaches footy is first class. • SURPRISE packet Ash Harawira. “He is very raw and has not been coached before. Once Hook takes over I am sure he will develop under him next year. “I will bet my last five dollars on him playing first grade next season. I have no doubts that he has a big future and will feature a lot in first grade this coming season. His utility value is immense.” Green also sang the praises of prop Marty Cordwell, who gained representative honours and was among the best all season, along with Alex Bishop and Kyle Van Klavern. Youngster Alex Albert came up from the Colts and played his part on the wing. The Dolphins ran up against affiliate club the Sandgate Gaters in an elimination final. “The Gaters had the wood on us during the season, winning both times during the season proper before beating us in the semi,” Green said. “It was a bitter pill to swallow as quite a few of them played with us during the season and they also trained with us, so it came back to bite us.” In the final, dynamic fullback Marlon Doak, who turned out for the second half of the Intrust Super Cup season with the Dolphins, teamed with half Bobby Goulding to dump Redcliffe out. “I did say tongue in cheek at the start of the season that was what would happen and it turned out that way,” Green said. “But there was no animosity between the two clubs and it was how the partnership was designed to work.” Green praised the new-look reserves competition, saying the re-introduction of the historic clubs such as Wests and Valleys had older fans return to support their clubs. “I was so excited to do this role and I was stoked that Bob Jones entrusted me to undertake it,” he said. “He must have seen something in me and I threw myself 100 per cent into the role. “I have signed on for next season and I’m sure I will be so much better and I am already looking forward to next season. I have had a chat with Hook, and as I played under him, I already have a relationship with him. I want to be a coach like him … hard but fair. He just wants the best out of his players.” • LACHLAN Timm. FORMER Dolphin Justin Hunt will join his fourth NRL club next season. Hunt, who has been signed by Wests Tigers on a one-year deal, debuted for South Sydney in 2012 and has played a total of 21 NRL games across three clubs, including Parramatta and most recently St George Illawarra. The 26-year-old played seven NRL games for the Dragons this year and can cover wing or fullback. Tigers coach Jason Taylor said Hunt would bolster the club’s depth next season. He will join the NRL squad when players return for pre-season training next month. Dolphins duo in award limelight THE Dolphins featured in the QRL Awards at Brisbane’s City Hall last month. Although Wynnum Manly’s Patrick Templeman collected the prestigious Courier-Mail Medal in front of 350 guests last month with an impressive 34 points, Dolphins skipper Luke Capewell tied for sixth with 19 votes. Templeman finished nine votes clear of Hunters skipper Israel Eliab (25) to take out the player of the year award. Capewell wouldn't go away empty handed on the night, picking up the Struddys Intrust Super Cup Leading Points Scorer award. The Redcliffe skipper nabbed eight tries and landed 88 goals for a season tally of 208 points. Juniors win three titles THE 2015 season of the RealWay Junior Dolphins has wrapped up after a lengthy finals period. The finals format of the Stingers has been evolving in recent seasons to enable club volunteers to participate in as many games as possible and plays out over four weekends. Several teams made it through semifinals and preliminary finals in September. In the end there were six junior Dolphins teams successfully proceeding to grand finals in their graded divisions.
