The films are the comets. In February, they are out in the cosmos, burning a journey of light years with FLIFF ahead in their path. They arrive, delight and speed on in their futures, some to become stars (ROGER & ME, THE PIANO, SHINE, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, VOLVER, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK...), others to extinguish all their fuel and drift anonymously in the recesses of our memories. The celebrities too, take months of negotiations to pin down and secure and we have been blessed with a constellation of bright lights (Richard Attenborough, John Frankenheimer, Martin Scorsese, Claire Bloom, John Waters, Kevin Spacey, Michael Moore...see above). Sponsors are the suns and moons that control our tides. We take care to nurture and keep our telescopes on their orbits so the tides will ebb and flow on schedule. It often feels as if our long ellipse following the midnight of one fest to the dawn of another, takes us off far from the warmth of our season. Without the on-going novas of our annual sponsors we would have been sucked into a black hole, well, three decades ago. Giving daily appearances, the lightning bugs, our members. Making an annual pledge of cash to keep our doors open, attending weekly, loving, laughing, critiquing, suggesting and at all times pulling for us to shine on. Some have been here as long as my 27 fests. Though it might seem like nature is at play here and FLIFF would just happen as the Autumn Moon begins to glow. Not so grasshopper. Pull back the wizard’s curtain and behold the many munchkins toiling night and day to keep our doors open 365 sunrise/sunsets a year.
