They said it couldn’t – and shouldn’t – be done. South<br />
Africa was in flames from political violence, and the<br />
apartheid government was refusing to give up power.<br />
Risking their lives and careers, South African musician<br />
and music therapist Sharon Katz joined with singer and<br />
educator Nonhlanhla Wanda to form a 500-voice multiracial<br />
choir. Threatened with bombs and thwarted at<br />
every turn, they prevailed and railroaded across the<br />
country aboard The Peace Train to break through<br />
apartheid’s barriers.<br />
Singing their way into the hearts, minds and soul of the<br />
divided country in the midst of a civil war, they promoted<br />
a peaceful transition to democracy and went on<br />
to become Mandela’s face of the new nation. When<br />
Voices Meet documents the trials, tribulations and triumphs<br />
of those musician activists and young choir<br />
members who performed together for seven years and<br />
then reunited 20 years later to tell their stories.<br />

THE DIRECTOR: Nancy Sutton Smith has her Masters in education and teaches digital cinema, video editing, graphics, journalism<br />
and mass media at Northeast Community College in Nebraska. She spent 30 years as a TV news broadcaster, producer<br />
and video editor in Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Philadelphia. She was the Executive Producer of a daily half hour feature<br />
show, CN8 Extra, focused on human interest video features. When Nancy produced a piece that featured Sharon Katz & The<br />
Peace Train, the decade-long collaboration was born. Nancy won 6 regional Emmys and an Associated Press Best Editor<br />
Golden Mic statue for the first gang documentary ever produced in LA which went on to win a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism<br />
Award. She recently won Best Doc and Best Director at the US Premiere of When Voices Meet in Washington, DC.<br />
