Based on a true story.
Nurse Lucia (40) has been present at one inexplicable death too many, and the hospital alerts the police. Assistant District Attorney Judith
(28), driven by ambition and genuinely outraged, gets stuck in and Lucia is sentenced to life in prison. But something keeps troubling Judith,
and she discovers inconsistencies in witness statements, and even the suppression of lab evidence. Ignored by her superiors, Judith teams
up with Lucia’s lawyer, but at every appeal the original guilty verdict is confirmed. Things look bleak until they get the media involved and the
biggest miscarriage of justice in Dutch history is finally reversed.
THE DIRECTOR: Paula van der Oest graduated from the Netherlands Film and Television Academy in 1988 and worked as an assistant-director on
several feature films before debuting in the cinema with 1996’s DE NIEUWE MOEDER (ANOTHER MOTHER), which premiered at the Venice Film
festival. In 2002 ZUS & ZO (SIS & THAT), written by Paula, was nominated for a ‘Best Foreign Film’ Oscar - prompting Time Magazine to name her
'the Woody Allen of Amsterdam'.
Several years after making her first English-language film with MOONLIGHT in 2001 (which won her the Hollywood Discovery
Award for Best European Film and Best Foreign Film at FLIFF), she directed Dutch stars Rutger Hauer and Carice van
Houten in the hugely successful BLACK BUTTERFLIES (2011). An intense look at the life of South-African poet Ingrid Jonker,
the film was sold to over fifty countries and has won a great number of national and international awards.
Returning to the present day subject-wise, she wrote and directed THE DOMINO EFFECT (2013), an ensemble piece which
deals with the still on-going credit crunch. Her new film ACCUSED was very well received by Lucia de Berk herself, the
victim of the biggest miscarriage of justice in Dutch history: "Although she changed certain aspects for dramatic reasons,
she captured the heart of my story."
